Hello. My name is Tim. I am 22 years old, and I am having a problem with my eyes. I was taking the medicine Invega for my Bipolar disorder, but it made me very stiff and restless, so the doctor prescribed the anti side-effect medicine Artane, which immediately caused blurry vision. I was on both these medicines for 6 months. I have been off of these medicines for 3 months now, and I am still experiencing constant oscillating vision, where everything subtly moves and shakes. I am a college student, and I'm having an incredibly hard time reading, focusing, and concentrating. I feel like my life is shattered. I saw a neuropthamologist, and she noticed the shaking when I looked to the Left, Right, and Up, but she did not notice anything when I looked straight ahead. There is nothing wrong with my lens or my optical nerve, so I feel the problem must be with the muscles behind or in front of my eyes. The neropthamologist is scheduling a brain MRI and looking into possible medications to correct my problem, but she said the medication is not even proven to work and is very sedative. Does anyone know what happened to my eyes and how is could be corrected? Any help, ideas, suggestions, or geuses would be greatly appreciated. Please help. Thank you.

I'm sorry about your eye problem. Hopefully, your doctor will be able to figure it out with the MRI.

I have heard of some psychiatric (including antipsychotic, antidepressant and antiseizure) medications causing eye side effects such as oculogyric crisis, nystagmus, diplopia and even loss of color vision. Some can be permanent.

We do have a family member with some permanent vision impairment presumably from a simple antidepressant.

Other vision changes have been temporary.

I do hope you and the doctors report this to the FDA via their MedWatch program. Our family member's vision problem was added to the list of possible side-effects for that antidepressant.

So sorry you're having these problems. I don't have any experience in this area. Some other memebers here may have better advice for you on this.

You're so young. Your whole life is ahead of you. I hope you get a handle on this problem. In life's journey we often incur insults and injuries that set us back. It's not easy when you find yourself in that spot. You'll go on with life... or life goes on even if you have difficulties.

Keep searching for help.

I would like to suggest you see if the neuroopthamologist would try sending
you to a Physical Therapist that specializes in these issues. There are
such people. It would maybe do you some good.

One of the things they would do is try to retrain your eyes to work with you.

Also I would get ahold of the department of disabilities at the college and
find out what kind of documentation you need to get some help with college
work.

You wont need anything very extensive. Probably just like your text books on
tape and some help like this. I would definately look into this as a temporary
help.
