Default Wheat again?

There are a lot of new faces around here who may not know, but wheat intolerance can show up as major neurological symptoms - as in being unable to walk. I seem to have to prove it to myself ever now and then and did so today. I am recovering but lament the loss. It seems to particularly affect my lower legs. My current account is here. If it sounds familiar, search the forum archives for more info. It is a real problem because wheat is everywhere.

Currently (2011) taking 200/50 Sinemet CR 8 times a day + 10/100 Sinemet 3 times a day. Functional 90% of waking day but fragile. Failure at exercise but still trying. Constantly experimenting. Beta blocker and ACE inhibitor at present. Currently (01/2013) taking ldopa/carbadopa 200/50 CR six times a day + 10/100 form 3 times daily. Functional 90% of day. Update 04/2013: L/C 200/50 8x; Beta Blocker; ACE Inhib; Ginger; Turmeric; Creatine; Magnesium; Potassium. Doing well.

Reverette, I sure appreciate this post. I've gone gluten free, MSG free, and this week soy free. Doesn't seem to leave much else, but I feel better that way. I don't have a PD dx as of yet, but figure I better do all I can to take care of myself!

PD or not, if it affects a subset of us so blatantly, is anyone safe?

MSG ought to be outlawed, in my opinion. I try to make a habit of asking in restaurants, but they don't always know. Those with gluten, dairy, and MSG sensitivities are severely limited when eating out! I find I do best with foods that are as whole as possible.

Default more thoughts

From me wee blog...

I want to speculate a little more than I normally would, mainly because I haven't finished researching this topic yet. I have been thinking about wheat, of course, and that has led to some interesting questions.

What if our food is trying to kill us? I don't mean that our poor choices of fatty snacks are plugging our arteries. We already know that. I mean, what if our food is actively and purposefully attempting to knock us off? What if we are in a war and are under attack and don't even know it? What if there is an intelligence out there in the garden that "hates" us enough to wish us dead? Far fetched? Perhaps. But let's think about this a little more before we turn our backs on that seemingly innocent radish. And keep your eye on that green bean - he may not really be your friend.

For just a moment, put yourself in the position of a plant. Your goal in life is to make more of your kind. That poses a problem in that you are essentially defenseless as well as anchored to one spot. You can't run away. And if it comes to blows, that rabbit will claim the championship very quickly.

Your only option is to use your intelligence. Now, before we sneer let's keep in mind that we are trying to outwit a bunny rabbit. And "intelligence" has several definitions, some of them quite broad.

So you stand there in the sunlight pondering your problem and it occurs to you that you really don't need to eliminate the bunny and, in fact, he is actually useful at times. You just need to manipulate him so that he doesn't wipe out your offspring - your seeds. You link together some stray molecules lying about the place and store it in the seed. You are happy to offer up a leaf now and then in order to assure yourself a supply of bunnies. But that new version of your seeds is going to make a sick rabbit. If he doesn't get the message, he may become a former rabbit.

This strategy is very effective and common in the plant world. Seeds often are laden with poisonous proteins called "lectins". They can be deadly..... (More)

I just found your blog today for the first time! I guess its been a while since I've dropped in here.

The blog looks great... I will have to go back and explore it... and find a good place in The Gluten File to put a link to it!

Thank you Cara! I just finished posting nice things about your work as well. Those of you who either are unaware of the Gluten File or who think that it doesn't apply to PWP had best think again. - Rick (http://parkinsonsonline.org/blog1/ ))

A friend was recently looking for something on PD and gluten, and thought for sure there must be something in TGF. There isn't! I guess because there really isn't any hard data out there. Just speculation, theory, hypothesis, and anecdotal reports that some people find improvement with a gluten free diet. So, I found myself forwarding him to this forum~ where I was browsing for related posts and found the link to your blog.

With your blog and Heidi's paper... I think there is enough to offer to get people thinking.... maybe.... I should look further... maybe... I should try it.

The thing about making dietary changes is there is no downside, no concern for negative side effects...only a chance for a positive response. All it takes is a leap of faith, positive attitude, and experimental mindset .

So, you are still gluten free then? Notice increased symptoms with wheat exposure? Have any others been experimenting with positive results?

Default Still hanging in

I'm still avoiding gluten as much as possible. I have begun reintroducing it in small amounts as of about two weeks ago. It does not take much to make a noticeable difference. This morning I had two pancakes. Threw caution to the winds! I definitely feel it tonight. Paid close attention today. No other reasons for it either.

It is now the next morning (Pancake + 2400 hr) and definite worsening of condition since yesterday morning. Not functioning as well (say 75%) and don't "feel good". Now I will go back to "good boy" mode and see how recovery goes. If this is indeed the result of reacting with gluten, the difference is enough that there would be no contest - gluten's gotta go.
