Exclamation OT: elderly relatives

Many of us who frequent this board have elderly relatives - perhaps our parents or other family members? I am living through how NOT to leave your affairs in case of illness or death...

My elderly aunt passed away on Christmas Day.

--She left a will but no general power of attorney.
--She was mad at us so she had taken my mother's name off of her checking and savings accounts.
--We have not found her medical insurance card.
--Her papers are a mess, but we did find the Will

Here is what we are going through:

--We don't need to go through probate, but had to hire lawyers
--Had to hire lawyers to get an affadavit so we can access her accounts
--Without her medical card, the Medical Insurance company is limited in what it can tell me because of privacy laws. So insurance bills are rolling in and whom do we contact and how/when do we pay?!
--Everyone is leery of speaking "officially" to me - I am POA for my Mother who is executor of the Will. My Mother is unable to perform the executor's functions. I offer to fax the will plus my POA, but no one has taken me up on that offer.

Fortunately my mother is organized and has everything set up for me to take care of her future affairs, but oh what a mess the aunt left us.
