Default What was the last thing that we actually CURED?

I got to wondering tonight what was the last thing that we as a society/mankind whatever you call it cured? We've got lots of stuff that we treat better and detect more of this disease-perhaps it's just becoming more prevalent, hmmm. But what was the last thing that we truly cured with our "modern medicine." We're just treating the symptoms, not controlling the disease. Just food for thought, I'm thankful we're where we are at but it seems like it's not going anywhere.

Good question! Just last night I was watching the classic movie BenHur and commented to my family that how Leprosy can be cured these days! So are TB, typhoid, small pox...Common theme for all these diseases except small pox is that they are all bacterial infections and antibiotics work well. So it seems we are good at solving one pathogen-one disease puzzles.

I cannot think of any diseases we managed to cure in the last 20 years or so
but definitely learnt to control them. Various cancers (leukemia, breast cancer)) and AIDS and are good examples.
Good question, makes me think about all the good that came oout of research labs!

Does AIDS count? In the U.S. people don't seem to be dying of AIDS anymore.

oh, do not have Parkinson's but seen this thread, my take on it at times really is...

does the US WANT to cure anything... really... i do not mean that the country likes to see people in pain or hurting... but with the amounts of money the medical profession and the drug companies make on all the testing, and drugs and all... do they WANT to cure something...anything.... just a thought...

hoping they are trying to cure things, but hey we can put a man on the moon, we can do all sorts of medical procedures, we can do all sorts of scientific wonders... but not find any cures for any diseases... really!!

hugss to you all, and hoping this finds all in less pain then ever hugss, sarah

Heart Extradonary Measures

Pompei Disease.

Also, through the National Genome Project, genetic research has discovered what enzymes are missing to metabolize energy at the cellular level and are hard at work finding ways to replace the enzymes.

Hope is never lacking but does take time. If more persons would get involved in research, perhaps it would help hope seem closer.
