Thumbs up

Thanks, Madelyn, for this fascinating video!

I've linked it over at our Diabetes forum, for those members to read as well.

We're on a low glycemic index diet ever since I had a nasty bout with peripheral neuropathy due to a B12 deficiency. We're doing pretty much no refined sugars or carbs and either small amounts or veggies with very low sugar and carbs. I really think it helps but regardless it's probably a lot healthier than all the french fries and milk shakes I used to eat. We recently found a low carb bean flour in an Indian grocery. We have almond flour and soy flour so we can make some bread and biscuit type things with them.

There is a really low sugar, carb diet that actually prevents siezures in people who don't respond to meds and you can read about it on Johns Hopkins website. We were really aggressive for about six months and more recently have just added small portions of the slightly higher sugar content things like strawberries and so on.

There are also brain tumors that feed on sugar and if all sugar is eliminated the brain tumor will shrink. So there are several things that respond to low carbs.

You can actually do pretty well on the really low carb diet. We add a lot of the healthy oils, keep the protein to about 4 oz a meal or less and eat a lot of the really low car veggies.

I'll read up on whether low potassium is a common problem with PD - haven't heard that yet but we seem to have a lot of absorption problems. I'm on folate, B 12, calcium, magnesium and calcitriol, a form of vit D, as I was deficient in all of them and I've always eaten really healthy foods. Just lucky I guess.

You guys probably know that there is a significant link between osteoporosis and PD and I've been diagnosed with osteoporosis for 15 years and treated for it - just got lucky because men my age at that time just don't have it so most docs won't test for it. So gentlemen with PD - get tested. It's horrible if it's not treated. My mother was so bad by the time she died at age 68 that she could not sit up or cough without breaking a bone. She was in constant pain. I've been really lucky treatment is now available.
