Default what is your dominant neurotransmitter?

i have no idea how much validity there is to this. it's just that one thing leads to another so it might be interesting.

Paula,

I've realized that many of us thinking along the line of neurotransmitter balancing sheets have become, in their minds, what are called stackers. This forum, which I have shared here before, is teeming with young adults who think they have found the solution to immortality by "stacking" their brains with nootropics. Many are convinced they have dopa or acetycholine depletion and always are in pursuit of the perfect "stack" or blend of supplements to ensure a long life free of dementia. It is fascinating stuff and PD does creep into the discussions. The amount of knowledge in these kids is amazing...maybe we should start an Immortality vs. NeuroTalk annual quiz bowl to see who has the best "stack"? lol

Don't have time to substantiate all these claims but simply key in acetycholine and intelligence as keywords...your test is in there and all the kids compare their scores. All kinds of assertions made and many backed by PubMed citations. For example, caffeine somehow works on acetylcholine synthesis and works for short term memory but bad for us in the longterm. The forum is at Imminst.org

Anyway, they are in a way attempting the same thing some of us are exploring but are actually taking all kinds of things to mimic or enhance the biochemistry in their brains...it's bold, foolhardy, and most likely all done in vain, but I do think we may be able to find some leads to more useful or substantial info on the exploration here in this thread. For example, how do they even know their neurotransmitters are unbalanced in the first place?

Don't have time to substantiate all these claims but simply key in acetycholine and intelligence as keywords...fascinating stuff! Here is a particularly juicy one on anticholinergics...this serves to highlight that it's not enough to saythat something enhances or works with acytelcholine- like the Concussed Scientist was saying "suck it and see" should probably move this to the post on CDP- Choline?

"Aren't DMAE, Huperzine A, Lecithin, ALCAR, Centrophenoxine, Alpha-GPC, CDP-Choline ALL affect Cholinergics?

I know Wikipedia isnt a great source but, It does have some good information?

Cholinergic nootropics include acetylcholine precursors and cofactors, and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors:

So...

DMAE: precursor
Lecithin: precursor
ALCAR: Precursor
Centrophenoxine: Drug/Precursor?
Alpha-GPC: precursor
CDP-Choline: precursor

Huperzine A: Is the only inhibitor?

Vitamin B5: Is the only cofactor?

So, my question is, why are people taking so many precursors? Is Choline that important? Or do each do a certain/different thing?

Im reading threads of people taking Centropheoxine, Alpha-GPC, DMAE and ALCAR?

Wouldnt that be considered overload?"

REPLY:

DMAE is a choline precursor, but does not substantially increase synthesis of acetylcholine in the brain. Further, DMAE competes with choline for uptake into the brain, and may have some anticholinergic effects.

Lecithin is a delivery form of phosphatidylcholine, along with various other phospholipid conjugates, and has shown some effectiveness in hepatic disease and impairment characterized by high lipid level buildup in the liver. The neurological effects have not been well-researched, but conjecture exists that such supplementation could raise levels of PC in the brain, and thus increase acetylcholine levels.

ALCAR, aka acetylcarnitine, is not a precursor to choline, but rather is an acetylated form of the amino acid carnitine, which has some structural similarity to acetylcholine. Some research has suggested that ALCAR may mimic the effect of acetylcholine as an agonist in cholinergic neurons.

Alpha GPC aka Choline Alfoscerate is a substance derived from phospholipids, and research indicates that is serves as a precursor to acetylcholine, as well as other experimental cognitive neurological effects.

Huperzine A is an acetylcholine esterase inhibitor, i.e. it prolongs the effect of acetylcholine on cholinergic receptors, but does not raise the level of acetylcholine in pre-synaptic neurons.
Vitamin B5 is a cofactor, among others, in the formation of acetylcholine.
i'm not one to promote supplements because i don't remember to take them . This research interests me as a pd researcher. and we are that - pd patient researchers. so there was a time when i would never have put a link to a commercial sales site in any post and the forum reception to these sites was one of complete rejection. That's how i was broken in, or cut my teeth so to speak, learning to distrust suppliments and their sales.

now i still don't take them... but i respect the right to explore for answers; i wonder how safe they are but why ?? my meds are killing me anyway. i took ghinko once and told the nurse at a doctor's office and she said - " don't take that stuff my friend had a horrible experience, etc. etc." you don't know what's in them. It gave me energy tho.

now there are white rats and even tho i still don't take supplements i know and respect much of that side of the picture and may do so at some point. i knew to get my vitamin D checked thanks to white rats and was very low. i do take it.

So the stacker crowd may hit something on pd, is that what you are thinking laura? can you give a url? i missed it if you put it in already but do remember you talking about another forum or chat room.

i don't think pd is as simple as a neurotransmitter imbalance. my objectives are twofold:

i would like to know everything there is to know about acetylcholine and all the transmitters to see if there are patterns. even tho this survey i just found is biased, we still might score similarly. if we discover that this assessment scale is valid we could possbily use it for our poster.

but i see what you are saying. a generation of people who think it is possible to achieve immortality...,,makes me tired to even read it. but then i'm an "old lady" according to the hate-filled Glen Smart video about the hate-filled tea party. He referred to bob as the old guy...now that offended me more than anything ! lol we are not that old and you never feel older than your 40s.

Immortaliy huh? Sorry don't mean to offend but i already have a plan for immortality- it's a mixture of science and the supernatural. It reminds me tho did you see where german scientists figured out how to make something invisible? it's done with light...wrapping the object in light! i'll find a source. it's for real. just think of the possibilities..would there still be mass? i was hoping they would talk about that part. could you still bump into it?

Now that could change the world! along with immortality... look at what we are discussing here..

thanks laura i 'll take any info you find. gonna stop here and continue in the next post.

Default scientific religious philosophy- not offensive

a word about a creator here and not meant to offend, just consider the science displayed by such a being . not adressing anyone here just thinking out loud. and don't expect a response unless someone feels like it. .

there is lots of talk in the bible about light....now we know just how special it can be.....it can be wrapped around things and make them invisible .it only reinforces these miracles we have such a hard time believing where religion is concerned. . we are being given enough information for our own survival and healing; we just have to figure out how to activate it - it's faith in science, just a different resource. Why we don't use both is beyond me. We are responsible for taking care of others and sharing , treating each other as you would want to be.

The bible also contains prophesy that is exciting and evident. but we aren't allowed to incorporate the scientific possibilities that could be right in the bible waiting for someone to figure out.

For those who believe in a creator, thinking can always be outside the box. you aren't limited by what you can only see or explain.

It's for now and that's why we figured it out now. [invisibility]

SCNT and cloning taught us that virgin births are possible...can have life wtihout a father. Altho this is a controversial topic. i'm truly trying to sitck to the truth as it is written, and altho interpretions vary, the similarities are there. Jesus was a virgin birth...it says that clearly in the bible. so i frew up thinking the entire episode was some kind of hocus pocus ....God could do anything.

Should i continue on about the placebo and healing?

not necessary. u get the idea. toss all these promises, yes they are promises. in exchange for belief and faith in a teatment that is completely outside the box. here's how i think about all of this. i think its pure science just waiting to be tapped and discovered. ok going to split this up because it looks like i'm giving laura a sermon but i'm not. i'm trying to figure it out too. but the evidence is there...outside the box. i broke up the posts so ignore laura getting a sermon part.

last religious philosophical thought about thinking outside the box and a member of this forum caused me to think of this altho i'm sure others have before me. it is religious and i will stop after this. this may cross a line of evangelizing for some but it's still logic and philosophy.

the story of adam and eve is so hard to believe as a non believer and even for believers. so we, as stated by my friend ,a serious bible student who is learning Greek, look at the bible stories as symbolic or metaphors. the story is Garden of Eden and there was no evil. We can't help but wonder why this could happen. Am evil serpent appeared who non believers of this metaphor to this day do not believe.

Our logic tells us they weren't really tossed out because of an apple? surely God who claims to be a loving God, wouldn't kill someone for eating from a certain tree?? god said he loves you, he isn't really going to punish you for eating from that tree; that isn't a quote but most know the story, whose purpose isto warn about being deceived. to this day, we think this way - God wouldnt' kill adam and eve, he isn't going to place such importance on an apple. The whole story is made up.but the message hasn't changed and neither has the response. surely you don't believe that people have a moral code, if you believe that, you just aren't cool and you are radical. Don't fall for that stuff, no one is going to be punished, it's just a story. so deception is everywhere in politics and the hill especially. we are so deceived that there isn't anthing to replace our anxiety and hate with. So much of what we think, do and react to, depend on ...is false.

we have brains to figure things out, but we haven't tried the one that, is capable of so much more. It's about doing the right thing and not giving in to deception. Why don't our prayers for healing get answered? i don't know. my husband prayed for me in Israel at places that are seen as holy. but i could be healed by god as i'm eating dinner some night or taking a shower. or that isn't in the plan, but i think i'm learning how to get closer to what the factors are that result in this kind of healing.

its not about going to church and trying to make everyone you know think like you do . pam quoted jfk or someone about the top is too far gone have to work at erasing hate at the low level - that was good logic. did it occur to anyone else that the same people are doing the protesting? bob is 60 he was possibly, protesting then. i wasn't much of a protestor but i worked hard to look like one and smoked pot like a hippie wanna be. We will never change the two parties but we could stage sit ins with a peaceful sign every day in April. let's give the tea party the intellectualism they seem to despise - oh the arrogance of intellectaul drives the non-suits [those who drive trucks and manage stores but don't own them, or are selling lawnmowers at Sears. have some education , many go to church, are critical in a rather ignorant sort of way but would make sense if the say it different. they are rednecks, some of them and that is a piece of American culture, not a bad word. but it is not happy with the govt because they have never had to protest as americans before. lt was about race, or war, something that involved acceptance of another culture. now they feel like they need to save america from too much govt . it could have been avoided if there was transparency in the govt.

people wanted change but were duped into thinking it would be in the center. and it immediately took a sharp left. the public was warned, but the warners were mocked. many were deceived and then the collapses, takeovers and spending scared us and rightfully so. China now is going to own our health insurance ....nobody read the bill so we shouldn't laugh too hard at the Tea party not knowing the issues. We have been told the few highlights that we want to hear - no preexisting conditions, no taxes on the middle class - just price increases. i fear a collapse and have considered where to go like steve. i'm that worried about our future.

so we have to get in on this new party and try to present the truth as we se it. Why would we let a party form [history being made] with smart people who want ot rid the nation of corruption. No one owns that party and they are well on the wrong way to succeed - they are hateful.
this must change or we will go down. Lets try silent protests with signs.
sit quietly with a peacful sign every chance we get where it might count during April. perhaps go back to the same place everyday and get to know the people there.

call the newspapers and tv stations and show no anger. let's put our bodies where our mouths are and keep the mouth quiet and still.

Wow, Paula that you could make any real sense of what I was trying to share amazes me. That jumble was the result of multi-tasking at the end of a long day. Sorry, anyone reading. I edited my original post so it hopefully makes slightly more sense. lol. The forum to which I refer is at Imminst.org

It just struck me that we talk about acetylcholine inhibitors, receptors, memory, anti-aging, dopamine...a lot of the same things that surface here but for dramatically different reasons. If you can figure out how they learn in a scientific manner their neurotransmitter baseline, I would love to know...largely I think they don't know but then neither do we? See what I mean. Anyway, may be some leads we can extrapolate.

I find the thought that they might achieve some sort of fountain of youth through stacking or attempting to balance their delicate play of brain chemistry both interesting and ridiculous in the sense they are trying to play God a bit, I daresay, to anyone who is inclined to spirituality or belief. They do have quite a range of knowledge at the forum which I think may give you some leads on the neurotransmitter research but would need to see it in terms of PD and perhaps avoiding dementia. I'd say it is a diamond in the rough kind of place; many post citations to scholarly articles, so that is helpful.

I am not in any way encouraging anyone to start playing with supplements on their own. I know that if I didn't have PD I would be reluctant to fool with much of this stuff, let alone now with our depleted supply. After starting to look into the other neurotransmitters and reading your cautionary info on acetylcholine, I decided I am going to start seeing a Naturopath as a more responsible approach to the "suck it and see" method. I worry that as informed as we all may be, it may best to consult an expert to help keep on track with interactions and side effects. Supplements are drugs too...not to be taken lightly.

Hope this is a little more clear...I could use that light wrap too. lol.

A similar treasure trove o info and experience with general supplements can be found on the body-building sites. These guys are pros.
