Quoting RON: don't want to upset my own doc, he has been very helpful and co-operative.
Ron, you doctor was irritated...hummm

Ron, make an appointment with another doctor for a 2nd opinion, not just from your friend who had a DVT in the past??? Please

Am I echoing Paula and Thelma...YESSIREE!!

As to my week...it is not a good one medically. I am pretty bummed as I type...a couple of weeks now, but since Tuesday, even more so. My Internist and I had been trying to reach each other for a week, but with me moving I wasn't very stationary from Wed to this past Tues.

I called on Tuesday and the scheduling tech said, "He has been so concerned about you! He needs to speak with you! Please stay in one place today and he will call you after 5pm!"

Yikes, does that sound yuckie or what?

Needless to say I finally have an appointment with a surgeon. As my Internist put it, "You two can then talk about what approach to take with this." That doesn't sound good either.

Already have two incurable diseases I struggle with daily. The prospect of a third is so overwhelming!

Default Docs & Illnesses

Hi Carolyn,
I do hope you get good news at your appointment. I wait to hear how you go on, you must get a break soon. you will see.

I have spoken to another Doctor, as well as the friend who had DVT. I am fairly satisfied it is not DVT, the only worry is in 5 weeks time, we fly to Tahiti, meaning 20 hours in a plane, each way!! It is still as swollen but I now have an elastic hose on it, which seems to be helping.

Default anti-emboli exercises

Ron, we have patients do certain exercises after hip and knee surgery to try to help prevent DVT. They are recommended for long plane trips as well.
1. moving at the ankle, you point your toes down strongly, then pull your foot up towards you strongly

2. tighten your front thigh muscle as though you were trying to straighten your knee to its limit (on the plane you could also put your heels against the legs of your seat or some luggage and tighten the back thigh muscles as though you were trying to bend your knee against resistance); hold a couple of seconds, then relax

3. tighten your "cheek" muscles in your buttocks; hold a couple of seconds, then relax

Repeat the above LOTS, I tell patients ( jokingly) that 400 times a day wouldn't be too much so that they get the idea that many reps are important

Hope this settles down for you soon.

Default weekly check in

Ron, i agree with thelma and paula--i would go get an ultrasound. the "usual" diagnostic signs are not always present--ie pain, reddness, etc. and your doctor will get over being miffed--or just act as though he has, and he will have to act accordingly. (just FYI--we always take a baby aspirin prior to flying to decrease the incidence of DVT from sitting in a cramped position for a prolonged length of time--must be certain one has no problems with GI irritation/bleeding from aspirin products))
Carolyn, seems there is too much on your plate--I send good thoughts your way and much hope that all turns out okay.
Nothing earth shaking for this week in my life except for the information from an epidemiological study concerning low cholesterol levels and the development of dementia. am reading a book about the pharmaceutical industry and its association with the medical community --greed plus arrogance is a deadly combination...am also reading "The Inheritance of Loss" by Kiran Desai-- --wonderfully written book about colonialism and tradition vs modernity and individuality. much better reading than the book about the pharm industry. madelyn

Ron;

I have a DVT history and I flew from L.A. to Hong Kong last summer, so it can be done. Have you gotten a Protime blood test? It measures one of the clotting factors in your blood. Ideally your "INR" levels should be around 2.5 .

You should have an ultrasound done to rule out a clot.

Elastic stockings are a good idea. IF your leg is/has been swollen and either red and warm or blue and cold, you should seek medcal treatment immediately!!

get a exercise's to do on airplanes book and get up and walk around every hour or so.

DO NOT take DVT's for granted!! THey can be life threatening!

Default Dvt?

Sincere thanks to Caroline, Thelma, Paula, Chasmo, Olsen, and WendyS,(hope I did not miss anyone) for your comments and concern. In the UK, it is almost impossible to get something like a scan, or blood test, even if you pay for it yourself, without your own doctor sanctioning it in a letter. However, it does seem as though it is torn tendons rather than DVT. I have no pain in the calf, and there is no discolouration.
Also, the swollen ankle is the normal temperature. I have had 2 doctors opinion on it, My own doc would not agree to any tests, he is convinced it is not DVT, and I am starting to agree with him. I will keep a very close watch on it, and any signs of trouble, I can always go direct to a hospital, that is allowed in an emergency. Thanks again for all your concern.

Default Ron

Several years ago, right after I began taking Amantadine, my ankles and feet swelled up big time. I went to my internist and he was unable to determine the cause. I decided that it was the Amantadine (I was taking 200mg/da), called my neuro, who had prescribed it, and told him I was backing off to 100mg/da. When I did that, the swelling went down after a week or so.

Because I had a TIA a couple of years before my PD Dx, I took Plavix and low dose aspirin for several months. Easy bruising became a problem, so I dropped the Plavix and continue the 82mg aspirin/da up to the present.

I have never had DVT.

It's been cold here in the DC/Baltimore area as well -- not as cold as it's supposed to get next week. We were supposed to have an inch of snow on the ground by the time I got up this morning, but all it did was sleet a little.

I get the biggest kick out of the folks around here... as soon as it looks like there might be an inch or two of snow, the clean out the grocery stores! Toilet paper! Milk! Basic supplies! WE'RE GETTING SNOW!!! LORDY LORD!!! WE MIGHT NOT GET OUT UNTIL APRIL!!!

I'm from the Midwest. I laugh at them.
