I think I've read that anytime you are falling, if you can bend the knees and kind of let yourself collapse or roll down to the ground is the suggested way to avoid a full impact.
But I suppose if you are locked up or seized that is another complication..

Very glad you were saved from a car colligian while gardening --
- i had a gardening accident in 2004 - got a lot of dental surgery - got dentures instead of teeth -- lol - do not ever fall into the bowl of a shovel ! - some of my dh drs appts in rockledge -- we originally looked at houses there -- - too far away to easily watch the baby -- now renamed my monkey - - my spine dr appt on thursday is in viera - melbourne - deuk spine clinic -- would love an opinon if you know any -- - i will go read your profile -- i thank you for your post ....
