I have an appointment with my PD nurse tomorrow who agrees DAs are a bad idea and wants me to try azilect. I think he will be against me starting on sinemet as I am so young. Incidentally there are only 2 people under 60 with PD in my city according to him!
Any advice on azilect? Thanks Trixiedee |

My Friend,
I was just given Azilect 0.5 mg. one per day a couple of months ago. I did as much research on the drug (rasagiline) before I would take it. This drug has been out more than 5 years and less than 10 (I believe); therefore all the side effects have not been made evident because not too many have taken it over a long time. There is a "cousin" that has been used since 1962 named, "Selepryl" and another is "Desepryl". It is a liquid form of the drug (selegiline), which the liquid is 'citrate' form versus the tablet which is 'hydrochloride'. Selepryl is or was made in Mexico where it is OTC, not needing a script from a doctor. It is FDA regulated in this country; so I had to have someone get it from south of the border in order to try it. Literature said the body is able to absorb the citrate much better than the hydrochloride. I have taken a 1 drop dose in fruit juice daily initially, then built up to taking 2 drops in the morning and 1 drop in the afternoon (one drop=1mg). I was impressed with the improvement in less shaking and relief in the stiffness and my moods seemed to be more UP than before. This 'Family' of drugs seems to be able to help early in PD since it can be used alone without having to use Sinemet. That was a huge PLUS for me since I had many side effects when I started the Sinemet. Azilect has been tested lately and is even safer than first thought: http://www.news-medical.net/news/201...confirms-Azile... Here is what I learned that affects us most of all: The COST. Since this newer drug is not available in a generic form, it is HIGH: $385 for 30 tablets, which is $12.33 daily for one tiny tablet. Those with no insurance will never be able to afford taking it. I was able to obtain a 300 mg. bottle of the Selepryl for less than $75.00!!! Can we do the 'math' here??? See why I love to hate the GREED of Big PHARMA Industry in US. We are raped legally and there is not much we can do about it; except maybe at the Ballot Box come Election Day. BOTTOM LINE: If you can afford the Azilect it helps my symptoms of PD and keeps me from having to risk taking Sinemet for now. My advise if you want to save money and get the same or possibly better benefits for so much less $$$$$$ ask if you can get selegiline hydrochloride tablets prescribed by your doctor instead of the Azilect. You should be helped with either drug in my opinion at this point. I will be glad to keep you posted on my journey if you are interested. Take care and hope this helped you. Hi Trixi
I am on Azilect since 11 months I like it a lot no side effects (except small headache the first week) i always take it with 200mg EGCG,as the creators of Azilect advised this would reinforce its effect |
