This is getting more and more interesting and it deserves its own thread-
The story thus far, in part, is that low levels of PGC-1a are linked to Alzheimer's and diabetes. More and more that list is expanding to include PD. PGC-1a can be increased by intake of fatty acids. Those fatty acids are particularly plentiful in coconut oil. You may remember earlier discussion here on Dr. Mary Newport and her husband and their success using coconut oil in combating his early-onset Alzheimer's. As to what is going on, it is too soon to say. It could be that high glucose levels and/or insulin resistance is the link. It could also be transfats in our diets or a dozen other things. Time will tell, but time is a precious commodity and I don't have as much of it as I would like. So, as of two days ago, I have jumped on the coconut oil band wagon. My initial reaction is "Damn! This stuff seems to be working!" Placebo? Who knows at this point. I will, of course, post my observations, but my immediate one was that I was seriously over medicated and have begun to cut back. Second, yesterday I put in a good three hours swapping two washing machines around by myself without going off. Finally, I got up this morning and couldn't find my stick. It wasn't in its usual place at my bedside. I had gone to bed without needing it for the first time in months.

Cinnamon certainly needs to be tried but I am going to try to stay focused on one thing for at least a couple of weeks. Of course, if anyone wants to run a parallel track with cinnamon we could cover ground that much faster.... -Rick

I have a case of self-diagnosed sub-clinical hyperthyroid. Translation- the tests looked normal but I know better. Also, that condition is more common with PD as well. Coconut oil is said to boost thyroid function, so if you seem to be in that sub-group you may encounter things like hot flashes, anxiety, weakness, etc.
That doesn't mean you have to give up on it. The herb melissa officinallus (sp?) or lemon balm does a good job of quieting my own thyroid so I have introduced it into the picture. Also, timing seems to matter. I think that it is best that I avoid early mrnings, for example.

I just spent quite a bit at the Swanson's web site and cinnamon is among the goodies I expect to arrive tomorrow. I have been using coconut oil on and off this past week and now that you mention it...I have had very little wearing off effect and less anxiety. I plan on trying cinnamon and coconut oil, so I'll report in a few days. Is the coconut oil dosage still 2 tblspns? I take it that cooking with it counts, or is that a no-no as heating at high temp may alter benefit? I have a sub-clinical thyroid issue too, as you know. It'll be interesting to see if the cinnamon makes a difference. Laura |

Dr. Newport seems to be using 4 tsps. I'm starting with 2 tsps and intend to work up from there. Her husband (Steve) had a series of blood samples drawn that indicated clearance from blood in 3 to 4 hours. So she doses him at mealtime. If you have not already done so, check out her website and read her article about his first days with it. The resolution of PD-like symptoms is very heartening.

I would be very careful to ensure that if you are using cinnamon that is actually what it is. There is a lot of cassia masquerading as cinnamon these days, they do not have the same properties, just smell similar. Cinnamon has a less strong aroma, more subtle. It is also a finer powder. Cassia is said to have adverse effects as it has high levels of coumarin which is banned in Germany. Daily intake of either should be kept low, but especially cassia.
This site has good information: http://www.u10ccc.lk/index.htm There is a page that tells you how to tell the difference with cinnamon sticks. and how the colour varies. Also about it's use re diabetes. Lindy |

Rick mentions that he is taking melissa or lemon balm for thyroid related symptoms.
This herb is traditionally used for depression, though not on a regular basis, but more as a kind of rescue remedy. A small fresh leaf in a tiny fold of plain bread will give a lifting of mood, subtle, but definite. It should not be taken by chewing on raw leaves as this can result in mouth ulcers. Fresh leaves work better than dried herb. You need to ensure that what you have IS melissa, it has a distinct lemony fragrance when crushed - do NOT mix it up with lemon scented geranium which is a completely different plant and should not be ingested. I am not advising anyone to use melissa, if you wish to, do your research ask the questions, and make sure you have the right plant.......... Lindy |

First, let me emphasize that I only mentioned lemon balm in case it became important. It is not part of Dr. Newport's program nor anyone's other than my own.
Took coconut oil at bedtime. Slept well. Woke up this morning in noticeably better shape than usual. No AM brain fog. Physical function 50% above my usual. Time for meds to kick in unchanged, however.
