Hi Lindy,

By accident I stumbled onto an old ALS forum thread that was talking about connecting pleurodynia with motorneuron disease. But it was very outdated. Carolyn searched some and only found one reference. I thought I'd ask out of curiosity if many here had it. I was 24 too, coincidentally.

It hurt like the devil - name is very appropriate!

March 1988, age 42, in Asia. It was diagnosed simply as "pleurisy," but the description you cite, Paula, is right on the moneyl I was hospitalized for it and given nonsteroid anti-inflammatories, or maybe it was some kind of steroid drugs--hard to tell with the language difference, but it wasn't antibiotics. I was taken for a lung scan and a chest x-ray without an English-speaking escort, and so didn't "take a deep breath" when told. Luckily I knew something about x-rays and stopped the doctor the next day before he stuck a needle in my chest to drain it, having assumed the lungs were not inflated because there was fluid in the way.

It was there and then that I resolved to learn as much of the language as I could everywhere I went. Preferably in advance.

I don't think it was PD-related because I already had enough symptoms that were surely early PD. Dxed 11 years later when tremor finally showed up.

Thanks, Paula. Very interesting.

Default "OW"

If it is the same or even similar to pleurisy then my fullest sympathy.
I had pleurisy 3 times in 18 months. It feels as if you are dying....only being able to take the shallowest of breaths before being overwhelmed by screeching pain.
It hit me one night when I was alone.I sat against a radiator until I was able to move...it sort of paralyses your arm on the same side of the infected lung.

OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH...A NASTY ONE.

It is caused by the Coxsackie virus and people usually fully recover in several days.

I was diagnosed with this disease in 1967 at Expo in Montreal as a child

I'm not sure where I got fluid in the lining of the lungs as a defnition - I really think it was the opposite - the lining of the lung dries up. Just wanted to correct that for the record.

Diagnosed at EXPO - I guess that explains why it was so easy for you to get - dirty bathrooms? It's one of those grossly transmitted diseases. Thanks for posting.

Also wanted to add - that until I posted this thread, I never knew another person to have this virus.
