After doing some reading, I am curious to know if anyone else has ever had a viral condition known as pleurodynia, or Bornholms disease, aka 'Devil's Grip'? It causes severe pain from fluid in the lining of the lung. I was hospitalized for diagnosis after having pain too severe to ignore in my side. This occurred back in the 70's.
It is caused by the Coxsackie virus and people usually fully recover in several days. paula |

Sounds extremely unpleasant, Paula. I'm glad it was long ago, and that you recovered completely.
I've never heard of it. I wonder how it got the name :Bornholm! Bornholm is an island in Denmark, in the Baltic, south of Sweden. It is known for grandfather clocks and smoked herrings, and now also for a virus. |

I know there is a good reason you are asking this, Paula.
I could only find one reference to pleurodynia and Parkinson's disease online and that is dated 15 December 1980.

I remember hearing of the 'Devil's Grip' when I was a young boy. I haven't heard that term used since then. If I remember correctly, it's a very dry painful inflamation of the lungs.

I was brought up being told that the "g" wa a bad cough - which I always had. I believe that it had a strange spelling like gryppe, grype, or something like that.

mamafigure,
Could you be thinking of the Croup? Which I don't know how to spell either...lol. Pleurodynia has no cough, thank heavens, it would cause intolerable pain. I remember my husband came to visit me with his hair all weird and spiked to "make me laugh" when he walked in. Well I did and hurt so bad. Paula

Here is a complete write up on it. Obviously I touched something quite contaminated to get it. You can have a dry cough - glad I didn't.

Hi Paula,
I had viral pericarditis which has some crossover with pleurodynia. I was 24 and the worst part about it was the enforced six week bed rest, quite a lot of which time i was sedated because I wouldn't stay in bed! Also caused by the coxsackie virus - had a horrible achy chest, and inability to laugh without sharp pain, and what my aunt described as an 'odd dry cough'. The night after I was discharged I went out and danced till 4am! Was wondering what about pleurodynia exactly made you ask this question? Lindy |
