Gary Taubes has written several books on this issue, the most recent release is "Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About it." The book also discusses how Ketones are created when the body breaks down body fat. Others have posted the Ketone diet and the possible benefit it could have for Parkinson's patients. Neurologists have had successful outcomes using the diet as treatment for young children experiencing epileptic seizures.
Taubes argues that man survived by eating a diet high in fats, greens, and berries for millions of years. He explains how ketones are created by the break down of fat within the fat cells. He argues against the calories jn, calories out method of dieting only makes the metabolic system more efficient at storing fat. The brain uses the ketones for fuel, rather than glucose. The brain, he argues, runs more effieiently on ketones, which was what it was originaly wired to use. Vegetarians need not get up in arms. All Americans need to cut out refined white bread, rice, and sugar from their diet. Which is precisely what the American heart healthy teach in their diet approach. Vegetarians and ketone diets are both successful because both cut refined starches from the diet. The ketone diet must be monitored because strict adhearance to it will cause possible liver damage, kidney stones, and intestinal disturbances. Vegetarians have to monitor their diets to ensure they are getting enough protein and amino acids. The ketone diet also restricts caffeine. So while you are digesting that bowl of oatmeal and drinking that cup of coffee, you can come to your own conclusions. Please don't give the American Heart Association a bad rep by accusing them of a conspiracy to make Americans fat. Rememer, the author wrote the book to make a profit too. |

I've just finished this book, called The Diet Delusion in Australia, and what an eye opener it was.
Definitely worth a read, though I must admit I skimmed a bit as it is very detailed. Clearly shows that we are being constantly misinformed by the medical authorities and the media on just what is proven and what is theory. What comes out is that obesity is not a simple thing to treat, as the body is very complex. It's not as simple as saying 'eat less and exercise more.' Exercise can lead to hunger, so you eat more. And refined carbs may be addictive, so extremely hard to cut back on, yet they are without doubt the main cause of obesity, not fats and oils as they tell us. The book explains it all very well.
