Carl Hernz, “he who has the Parkinson’s” is back in the great game.
I want you to know that Carl Hernz is an artist. His major work of art is his own life. It is with great pleasure that we read stories about our very own Field Commander Carl infiltrating Hollywood. Specifically, he discovered a stunning alternate version of one of the most famous scenes in the history of cinema, from 1925. And Carl goes all 3-D on it. Right now I can’t write so good; I just wanted to tell you that Carl Hernz is back, tightly wired, wildly wide-seeing, always overflowing with creativity; and humanity. He and I share some secrets. When I first ran into Carl he was living under another name, in my world, at least. For two years, I called him Carlos Hernandez, from Mexico and Gibraltar. And suddenly he insisted I call him Carl Hernz, from Texas and Florida. And then there was some going back and forth, where he would go to a Cinco de Mayo celebration in Mexico and drink tequila and eat nachos, explaining to people that he was not Hispanic – but he was saying that in pure Mexican Spanish, with the accent of the remote villages in the High Sierra. Where, legend tells us, he would ride alone on his horse, and the local villagers said he was a poet and a brave man. Right they were. And then when I stumbled on the meaning of a phrase from the Bible, he explained to me six different translations of that phrase – how the meaning changed as translation changed down through the centuries. A profound religious scholar. Who would have guessed? His Biblical knowledge was as deep and mysterious as the ocean, and as open as the sky. And that was before I discovered his prolific production of websites, altered movies, obscure cultural trends, stand-up comedy, stage acting… An artist with PD. Is it an occupational hazard? And that was before I found out about his generosity. Carl Hernz is back. Carlos Hernandez is back. He and I or them and us have in common the ability to live in different countries in different languages under different names, with different voices, seeing things differently. But Carl has also lived things completely outside of my experience. Such as, having Parkinson’s at the age of 18 and being unable to take Parkinson’s drugs without getting violently ill. You know, it’s not what a young man would expect to have to learn to cope with. It is special. He would disappear for weeks, and then for months, and we would get worried and e-mail around looking for him. And then in the door he would walk, overflowing with ideas. I am also happy he is discussing all sorts of things with the Davis Phinney Parkinson’s Foundation. I know they will take good care of each other. Here is an anonymous letter from someone who knows Hollywood history: “I am touched by Mr. Hernz who has my thanks, sympathy, blessings and admiration. The greatest disease is not cancer nor Parkinson’s but, rather, the sense of feeling abandoned and unwanted. Any number of maladies can attack the body, but there are few that attack the spirit like loneliness. I truly hope that those close to Mr. Hernz remain so, and that those who’ve shied away find the strength, love and devotion in their hearts to return and stand beside their friend. Love can work wonders — miracles, in fact.” ----------- “After all the film is nearly 100 years old,” he exclaimed, “and it’s been viewed by many experts over the years, and you’re gonna tell me that this brown Latino-boy from Texas that can’t stop shaking stumbles over the fact that this classic was filmed in 3D, but by mistake?! Now that has gotta be a joke! It also means a greater gift in the end for The Davis Phinney Foundation and Carl Hernz’s own love of the cinema. http://carlhernzdotcom.wordpress.com...-chaney-in-3d/ http://carlhernzdotcom.wordpress.com/about/ |
