I stumbled at the following website which advocates an alternative PD treatment. I believe it is not recognised by the medical establishment but I feel is worthy of our attention!
Any comment? http://www.neuroassist.com/cysteine.htm The use of 4,500 mg per day of cysteine may raise a few eyebrows, but NeuroResearch Clinics data bases held the key to optimal sulfur amino acid dosing, 4,500 mg per day. This is unique data that NeuroResearch Clinics has developed. So why does NeuroResearch Clinics recommend using cysteine? Cost is the only fact, cysteine is very cheap. N-acetyl-cysteine, methionine, or SAMe can also be use but they too need to be dosed at 4,500 mg per day. Why so much cysteine? Toxins in the environment deplete huge amounts of sulfur amino acids every day. It has been estimated that driving 30 minutes twice a day consumes 1 gram of sulfur amino acids as glutathione detoxifies the toxins. Tyrosine and levodopa deplete the sulfur amino acids, which leads to epinephrine depletion. In the sulfur amino acid cycle, SAMe is also depleted. One of the leading theories on why dyskinesia occurs is based on SAMe depletion. With proper use of sulfur amino acids (cysteine), there have been no observed any incidences of dyskinesia when using levodopa for Parkinson’s Disease treatment. The philosophy of sulfur amino acid supplementation in treatment of Parkinson's Disease is to keep the system topped off with cysteine. levodopa has a strong ability to deplete the sulfur amino acids. If you deplete the sulfur amino acids glutathione levels drop and the bodies ability to neutralize the neurotoxins that cause progression of Parkinson's Disease is compromised. This in turn allow for the Parkinson's Disease to get worse over time as further neurotoxic insult occurs.
