KYOTO (Kyodo) -- A team of researchers said Tuesday it has been successful in improving the symptoms of Parkinson's disease in monkeys through the use of human embryonic stem cells to create nerve cells that produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain. The team, including Jun Takahashi, an associate professor at Kyoto University, said the monkeys showed improvements such as becoming able to walk or reducing the shaking of their limbs after the nerve cells were transplanted into their brain.
