As with everything by Goldacre, the article is well worth reading.
The key messages for us are, I think: - question everything: just because something is published in a journal doesn't necessarily mean it's true and, far more seriously, in some cases it may be biased; - all data, not just the positive, needs reporting; - this applies to us too in our white rat reports. Finally, question my post. Who is it funded by?! John

This is not a new story really, I have seen articles like this over the year. What is perhaps new is that it is getting more exposure in the popular press. There is need for more responsibility in the industry, as everywhere the profit makers are ramping up the way they make their profits.
There is a new agreement being made in the Pacific rim nations, centres around something called TPP which protects intellectual property rights. This matters with drugs, especially as it will also allow for tieing prices into so that they cost more. Growth in pharmaceuticals means selling more, or charging more. Not, I think, in finding cures. |
