Researcher's have already used another method to reprogram the nigra portion of the brain which breaks down during Parkinson's disease. They have used embryonic stem cells to replace the damaged cells, and the results have not been encouraging. For many of those in these trials (there have been many trials using this technology), they had either increased Parkinsonian symptoms, or increased dyskinesia. Many found no change in symptoms, and for those who did see an improvement, it was short lived, with the cells deteriorating again very quickly. How would this treatment differ from these embryonic nigral transplants?

The only novelty, as I understand it, is that with this method you can achieve the same results in much less time than before.
