i saw a video where the CEREGENE research was being discussed, one of the panelists was a neuro who was involved in the first phase2 study and he said he saw improvement in some patients.
so all researchers aren't assuming all dopamine producing neurons are dead.

I can back what Soccertese says here, at least on Ceregene, I spoke with one of main researchers and asked hi how it was the that a neurotrophic was alleviating symptoms too. He replied that they wondered the same and it looked like neurons may be disabled or otherwise impaired.
Further, I just read that with the Ganglioside treatment in Jefferson U in PA, there is also clinical evidence that neurons can be restored. The lead researcher says:
"...the drug may protect patients' dopamine-producing neurons from dying and at least partially restore their function..."
These two reports along with the fact Amgen's treatment did same is really encouraging!
