I’ve been a “health nut” since my college years, making my own crunchy granola, adding brewer’s yeast to baked goods, worshiping Adelle Davis author of Let’s Eat Wright to Keep Fit and Rachel Carson author of Silent Spring. My father would just roll his eyes at me mumbling under his breath “this is what I’m paying $3,000 a year for,” (Remember, it was 1971 and that was a hefty tuition then.)
Well time has gone by and I still am a “health nut.” Ten years ago, after a bout with early stage breast cancer, I started eating an organic flexitarian diet, eating whole grains, fruits and veggies along with fish and small portions of lean meats and eliminating processed artificial foods. We eat vegetarian meals on average of four times a week. Yet now I have PD. So, do I believe this so called healthy diet is a cure all? Absolutely not. But I am doing very well, I haven’t progressed since I was diagnosed eighteen months ago and my doctors have given me a clean bill of health regarding my cancer.
As a child growing up in the fifties I was exposed to smoking parents, swam in a pond by a tungsten mine, drank well water and my father was always spraying something to keep pests away. But I still continue to be a “health nut” because maybe things would be worse if I weren’t so darn healthy. Adelle and Rachel would be proud of me.
Now where is my Eat More Kale t-shirt? It’s time for my power walk.
