Default Song of the week

Bob and other music addicts (we know who you are. we just don't care). This is a group that my 25 yo nephew turned me on to about and hour ago. Close your eyes and imagine the smell of tequila and you'd swear that a young and innocent Janis had just walked out onto that stage! Damn these guys are good! Their first album (yeah, the old guy called it an album. so get up and dance kid ) is out this month called "Boys and Girls" From Athens Alabama lets give a big welcome to Alabama Shakes !!!!!!***********

Default Not only is she chanelling Janis

She is obviously destined to re-record Cheap Thrills!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HxNt...D02R3NESiG-QhE

And another thing, if anyone can watch this, well let's say it, obese black young woman running around the Deep South with a van full of white good old boys who, clearly, would stomp the *** of anyone who had anything to say about it, and not appreciate the spiritual redemption of the Southern US just ain't paying attention. Gawd I love the South

"The South may not always be right, but by gawd we ain't never wrong!!" Brother Dave Gardner - the Lenny Bruce of the South

Default I love this about America

Uncle Seymour Washington, the "walking blacksmith" (because he walked from farm to farm, shoeing horses) has his 87th birthday, and his neighbour, Townes Van Zandt, goes over and sings him a song - the first song that Townes ever wrote. This is the real thing - American neighbours. Makes it all worthwhile. God bless.

Default Another song from the South

Bonnie Raitt, goddess of the slide guitar, and one of the finest human beings to ever stand on stage, is seen here mentoring the younger generation: in this performance it is Norah Jones, who responds with admiration towards Bonnie, and pure humbleness and affection.

As Phil Ochs said, “In a world brutalized by ugliness and horror, it is the creators of Beauty who are the true revolutionaries.”

(Umm, URL caught in space-time warp; will get it here soon if the creek don't rise)
OKAY: this should work:

Rick,
Thank you greatly for the Alabama Shakes. That woman is among the very best, of all time, and if this group can keep their heads on straight despite the avalanche of fame and the emotional exhaustion of revealing your soul to the world, there is every reason for them to become famous. She is better than Janis Joplan, way better than Grace Slick - and those are singers I like. The Alabama Shakes are the real deal. I am prowling the net to download everything i can find by them, and i will sure be happy to actually pay for their first "album" when it comes out.
Hey Ginnie, check out "You ain't alone."

Default OT: care-giver pacification moment

This should go in the Caregiver forum, but the caregiver in question checks only this Parkinson's forum, to see what I have been up to, and this explanation, an apology, has to get through; the situation being that she has some complaint about my attitude as a care-receiver. Who me?

I let the 2 Lenny's - Cohen and Bruce, do the heavy lifting for me at times like this.
I figure this should be adequate as an apology, or at least an explanation:

I showed my disease to the doctor.
He said I'd just have to quit.
Then he wrote himself a prescription,
and your name was mentioned in it

Then he locked himself in a library shelf
with all the details of our honeymoon
And I hear from the nurse
that he's gotten much worse
and his practice is all in a ruin

I heard of a saint who had loved you
I studied many years in his school
He taught that the duty of lovers
is to tarnish the golden rule

And just when I was sure
that his teachings were pure
he went and drowned himself in the pool
His body is gone
but back here on the lawn
his spirit continues to drool

(That should do it.)

btw - SNL has been having some great "new" (to me) bands this season...

Default Standing at the crossroads - CALVIN RUSSELL

Americans are too uncultured to realize what a great culture they have. This video was recorded in France; throughout Europe, he is much more famous than in the U.S.A., and this is true of many American artists. Huge audiences abroad; neglected and forgotten in the U.S.A. Would America please hurry up and become a mature country?

It’s like when they asked Mao’s foreign minister, Chou En-lai, about the success of the American Revolution, he said, “It’s too early to tell.”

People like to say America is finished; but it has barely just begun. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

Two things about this song that knock my socks off:
(1) Calvin Russell spent 15 years in maximum security prison.
You know, drugs, armed robbery, that kind of thing.
And then, he changed his own life, and as no one predicted, he followed the path from chaos to art.
(2) This song lists his disasters, but it is a deeply felt love song… (“leaving you was my only mistake”)

One road leads to paradise
one road leads to pain
one road leads to freedom
but they all look the same
Well I've traveled many roads
And not all of them were good
The foolish ones taught more to me
Than the wise ones ever could

One road led to sacrifice
One road led to shame
One road led to freedom
But I swear, they all looked the same.
And there are roads I never travelled
And there are turns I did not take
So many mysteries
I could not unravel
But leaving you, that was my only mistake.
