My thanks go to soccertese for posting.

Still very early days, but I think this is one to watch.

The report of the research [1] describes the active ingredients as ergothioneine and vitamin D2, and goes on to say that in mice it led to a decline in alpha-synuclein levels in the mid-brain.

Wikipedia describes ergothioneine "as a naturally occurring amino acid ... [which] cannot be made in human cells, it is present in some tissues at high levels as it is absorbed from the diet... In humans ergothioneine is taken up from the gut and concentrated in some tissues by a specific transporter called ETT (gene symbol SLC22A4). However, even today, one hundred years after its discovery, precisely what ergothioneine does in the human body remains a mystery... Foods rich in ergothioneine include liver, kidney, black beans, kidney bean and oat bran, with the highest levels in bolete and oyster mushrooms"

Vitamin D2 is ergocalciferol.

Tag johnt:alpha-synuclein

I'm not so sure about this one as you are, John. Seems to be a company setting up to hype supplements that they produce. I would need to see a lot more professional human research before I got excited as opposed to a small rodent study.

The company, Entia, considers themselves "...an authority on the clinical effects of oxidative stress and free radical reactions... ". Yet, if you review their financial reports you wouldn't get that feeling. They appear to make one supplement, ERGO-D2, which they claim is beneficial for diabetes, anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, alopecia, psoriasis and now Parkinson's. Yet, on a search of ClinicalTrials, I couldn't find one study on the product.

I always get concerned when a small company touts another supplement knowing that ill people will pay for, and try, almost anything in their search for relief and cure.
