Although I am happy that this diet works for Glen, I am waiting on testimonials from other PDers. I went to the Amazon website and found 4 positive reviews, but none from PDers who actually tried the diet. Everybody's metabolism, gut flora, and food allergies are different, so I don't expect an across-the-board PD diet to work for all PDers. I am wary about eating to much Solanaceous vegetables since they contain solanine.
From Wiki: Ingestion of solanine in moderate amounts can cause death. One study suggests that doses of 2 to 5 mg per kilogram of body weight can cause toxic symptoms, and doses of 3 to 6 mg per kilogram of body weight can be fatal. From Huffingtonpost.com: For the average adult, 400 mg of solanine would be life-threatening. Vegetables in the nightshade family contain anywhere from 2 to 13mg of solanine and eggplants contain 11mg at the most. So you would have to eat 36 raw eggplants to cause any harm. But who knows, maybe it is solanine that causes a positive effect in PDers. |

Hi Dean, A touch of solanine and partner chaconine in your diet does have the effect of inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. So you have more acetylcholine available for effective neurotransmission. Also they are anti microbial, so they help prevent infection. I layout my whole diet in the book, but I only ingest about 6 eggplant per day, or about 3 kg. I have most of that as eggplant juice. Fun fact, I ingested the total eggplant yield of one-fifth of an acre in the past year. Plus I have some form of peppers, green tomatoes, and often potatoes with every meal. I'm certainly not getting the least sick from it. I was tested and found not to be allergic. Keep in mind that there is more solanine in spoiled vegetables. In the Potato Famine the Irish got sick from spoiled potatoes. So it's better to select nice ripe veggies. Further there are many compounds that are beneficial at low dose but become toxic at high dose. God Bless Glen |
