23andMe, the personal genetics startup, has announced that the DNA data collected on 650,000 individuals would be shared with pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. 23andMe is backed by Facebook billionaire Yuri Milner and Google Ventures.
The companies have said that sharing resources will help them develop new treatments for diseases and new ways to design clinical trials. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the companies.... ... 23andMe's database has paved a new way of generating revenue by sharing it with companies like Pfizer and Genentech that are endeavoring to gain insight into the underlying genetics of chronic diseases. The deal between 23andM and Pfizer has marked the second collaboration. The companies started enrolling 10,000 people with inflammatory bowel disease in August. The motive behind this is to study the condition's genetic factors and developing therapies. ''' Pfizer said on Monday that the new deal will enable researchers get access to 23andMe's database of 650,000 patients and establish new links between genes, diseases and traits.
