Default USF doing a clinical trial on coconut oil and alzheimer

http://health.usf.edu/byrd/enrollingstudies.htm
An 8-month pilot study investigating coconut oil for individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. For more information. For more information, please see study flyer.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/t...about-coconut/

"For olive oil, we have very strong studies showing that it's reduced the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer," says Kirkpatrick.

The oil also has been hailed for its potential to delay the effects of Alzheimer's Disease.

"I get asked about coconut oil on a daily basis," says Amanda Smith, medical director at the University of South Florida's Byrd Alzheimer's Institute in Tampa. She says she has heard mixed reviews from patients who've tried it and is conducting a study to determine whether cognitive benefits exist. "Some say that it helps, and others have perceived no benefit. But we don't have the data to make specific recommendations."

Coconut oil was used in 2.5 year long therapeutic program on reversal of cognitive decline in early stages AD patients. This is the link to the detail description of the program:

Default Read the study, it was not just coconut oil

I am all over the benefits of coconut oil, but be careful to note that in the above study, the patients did A LOT of things besides just take coconut oil. Custom programs were developed for each patient, based on their bloodwork, and included things like taking melatonin for better sleep (all patients got increased sleep, which makes anyone feel/function better regardless of underlying health issues), taking supplements most notably the B vitamins which greatly affect neuronal health and function, among others. I think it would not be accurate to read the study to say that the improvements seen were due solely to coconut oil.

Lurkingforacure, I completely agree with you that the success of the study at no time can be contributed to coconut oil. It was maybe a minute contributor (if) to the overall success, however coconut oil advantages cannot be dismissed. Personally I am pleased to find out (since I am taking it daily for constipation ) that coconut oil provides some benefits in PD management (yet to be seen in my case ).

You may also be interested in "oil pulling" (which can be used with coconut oil). A great detox!
