Default Surgery and Azilect

Hello Forum,

Has anyone had elective surgery while on Azilect? I'm currently taking 1mg daily of Azilect and 1.5mg daily of Miraplex. I need to have an abdominal hernia repair before it becomes emergency surgery. Everything I read online says Azilect must be discontinued 2 weeks before surgery. While reading the surgery information about Azilect I reviewed all the foods you're not suppose to eat. I regularly eat cheese (cheddar not blue), drink red wine, a have taken cipro without any problems. I plan to talk to a few MDs before I go off this drug but wanted to know the "forum's " experience.
I can't imagine how I'll function the couple of weeks off Azilect.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Betsy

I just had knee surgery 2 weeks ago and remained on Azilect. No problems noted.

Thank you for the information. I'm assuming you had general anesthesia, correct, and not regional? Glad it all went well. Thank you.

Default Azilect and surgery

You should stop Azilect 14 days prior to any surgery.

I did have general, and I forgot I've been under twice. Each time I told them about AzIlect, it was no big deal..

Thank you both for your replies. I contacted my neurologist (movement disorder specialist) at Georgetown University Hospital and was told I didn't have to go off the Azilect. They sent me a packet to give to MDs and nurses prior to surgery mainly going over drugs I could and could not receive. Anesthesia will have to call my neuro and talk to him about the general anesthesia. My neuro said he has had several patients go under general anesthesia who were taking Azilect without complications. I know what the literature says ...go off two weeks prior...but apparently in practice it's ok to stay on. I'm hoping for no big deal as in your experience ScottSuff.
All the best to everyone,
Betsy

I wanted to follow up on surgery results. I had the surgical hernia repair today. General anesthesia and Azilect was not a concern to the anesthesiologist. All went well, I feel great and will start my usual walking on the treadmill tomorrow.
Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone else on Azilect considering surgery with general anesthesia.
