Does anyone use an exercise video that you would recommend? I already use a recumbent stationary bike and also walk. So I'm looking for videos with sitting, standing, lying down, warm-ups, stretching, aerobics, etc., that are suitable for PD at various levels of fitness and also enjoyable, with a good clear leader and a good soundtrack. I had back surgery last year and my fitness has really slipped, so I need to start rebuilding it. Doctors have cleared me to resume exercising, but I'm having trouble keeping up with regular videos. I know there are some PD exercise videos available, but which ones are best? Thanks!

the davis phinney foundation has a free dvd that I found helpful and it addressed different levels of ability. exercise is so important though it is difficult to keep up. I try for two 15 minute sessions per day of movement / stretching (yoga, tai chi). if I don't keep it up, I feel awful.

Thanks, Billy. I had already discovered the Davis Phinney video & ordered it, awaiting delivery. Interesting that I only got 1 response to my post. Looks like using exercise videos is not a popular activity on this forum! I really need to get in shape so I'm hoping this video will help. Today when I went to my Parkinson's chorus practice on 10th floor, I walked up 10 flights of stairs, did 15 minutes of physical warm-ups with the chorus, and walked back down when I left. But I need to be more consistent every day. I like your approach of 2 15-minute sessions daily.

Parkinson's Wellness & Recovery puts out a book called Power Moves that takes you through all the positions mentioned. It also comes with a DVD though it is more like stopped action than a video.
4 movements in each position focus on the movement problems specific to PD. There is lots of info in the book about ways to make the exercises more vigorous and include principles of neuroplasticity. You can find it at pwr4life.org I suggest you look on the website for a therapist or fitness professional trained in this approach to help you get started. Also revisit a therapist regularly to address movement problems as they emerge. Congratulations on all that you do. Exercise is so important! Fighting PD takes a lot of different types of exercise, especially ones that you enjoy. |
