Hi
I need safe ways to get more dopamine. Over the counter or supplements, but that wont work right? I have damaged dopamine receptors from drug Abilify with lessions in the brain. Just so you know, I have had parkinson like symptoms for a long time, but Im no expert on the disease. |

Hi mottec
Welcome to NeuroTalk . Dopamine can not cross the blood-brain barrier so eating supplements or other OTC products which allegedly contain it is pointless. Dopamine is made in the brain from an amino acid called tyrosine, which can cross the blood-brain barrier. The info in this link describes some natural foods which are good sources of tyrosine; http://mentalhealthdaily.com/2015/04...hink-tyrosine/ . In my opinion eating in a healthy way is, unless there is some underlying medical problem, preferable to eating supplements. All the best.

The effects of Abilify on the levels of dopamine receptors in the brain are controversial. Some animal model studies suggest that it increases them but others suggest that it decreases them. The (very technical) PDF that you can download from this link discusses this; http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26346901 .
If you are concerned about the possible side-effects of Abilify then talking with your prescribing doctor about trying another medication is a plan which is worth considering.

"Are you a Psych or otherwise knowledgable about this"
I am a biomedical scientist (PhD, not medical qualifications). If you would like to post the link from your post above I would be happy to have a look at it and offer my thoughts.
