You are already on other PD medications, but with Sinemet (Levadopa/Carbidopa) it is slow ramp up. week one: 1/2 tablet morning and evening week two: 1/2 table morning, noon, and evening week three: full table morning and evening; half at noon week four: full tablet (25/100) three times a day. Typically you will check in with your Neuro six to eight weeks later. Caveat: Empty stomach is best. No food one hour prior, nor 30 minutes after taking medication. The brain will allow Protein to go first, blocking the uptake of you medication. Catch is it doesn't stay long in your system after taking it, so by the time the brain gets all the protein, no Levadopa is to be found. For some folks, when first starting to take C/L maybe a couple of saltine crackers and sip of gingerale. If you take it with a full meal, you'll not get any benefits from C/L. Everyone varies on how soon they get relief. Tom |

I'm a bit late replying, I've been away. I started on the same dose of three 100/25 Sinemet a day on top of the 0.75 mg three times a day of Mirapex that I was already taking. It was very effective - I did a two day 50 km mountain hike a few months later. Two years later, I increased the Sinemet to four times a day, and another two years later I upped it to five times a day where I stayed for the next six years. Meantime I increased the Mirapex every year or two by the tiniest amount I could break off the tablet, I figure about 0.12 mg, until I was at 1.5 mg three times a day about ten years after starting it.
I always felt an improvement very quickly when I increased one of them, within a day. I think it's always a good idea to "start low and go slow" when starting or changing meds. That way you're less likely to have side effects, and you're less likely to be over-medicated. Good luck, I hope you're feeling the benefits of Sinemet by now! |
