Default try it yourself first

I got mine easily enough by myself. I would reccommend two things.
1. keep a contact log of all correspondence and phone calls to the SSA.
2. keep a copy of ALL paperwork that is sent either by you or the SSA.
On several occasions doing this helped keep the process moving forward when the SSA claimed that I had not responded.
Any big docs, like your application should be sent registered mail or hand-delivered with a written recipt obtained.
Also go to your SSA doctor exam in an "off" state. You want them to see you at your worst NOT your best!!

I really appreciate everyone's information and advice. We had a good visit with the dr today and are ready to get this process started now. I'll keep you informed... and probably ask more questions!
