Two moons on 27 August
27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for... Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will culminate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27, 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.

Olsen,
Thanks for the reminder. I've got the telescope and camera ready to go. With my luck it will be cloudy and raining though. GregD

I got this email a year ago and it was later followed by another w/ apologies that it was a hoax... I dunno, just passing it along. Come Aug 27, we'll know - if it's not raining.

just to push my buttons OLSEN
http://www.guidescope.net/solarsys/moon_mars.htm lets see, Mars has about twice the diameter of the moon and is 34,000,000 miles away, while the moon is only 240,000 miles away. You tell me how big mars is going to appear! |

whoops! Ibby and olcs--apologies--seems this is an old email--mars did come closer to earth on aug 27, 2003. It was 6 times larger than normal and 85 times brighter. It came within 35 million miles of earth, and at that time if you were peering thru a scope with 75 power magnification--you could see it. or we could wait another 60,000 yrs--that's when this will happen again.....olcs--glad to awaken you! madelyn

Yeah, I just found it on http://www.snopes.com/science/mars.asp
It evidently is being passed along as new science. It was interesting, so thanks for that! |
