Default Stephen Hawkings legacy....?

One of the cornerstones which the "art" of science rests iis that new findings must be repeatable. I digress....about 15 years ago when the symptoms I was experiencing were relatively mild (though I would argue no "Parkinsons" symptoms are felt as "mild") being the open minded person that I strive to be I entered into an experiment with a doctor who may be considered by some the ULTIMATE "quack" (what did the noble duck ever do to deserve that reference? after all ducks by nature have extreme electro magnetic sensitivity--just try getting close to a wild one....)anyway....continuing...this docs' name was "Dr. Joe Champion (go figure) who participated at Texas A & M in the first succesfull cold fusion experiment.....Later would go on to develop "ADAM technology" (short for Aphysical Dimensional Access Manager) .....and also claimed he could transmute certain substances to gold.....his speciallty was working with autistic kids and there he appeared to make some real inroads. During my time with the good doc who had just completed a prison sentence for hijacking nuclear secrets (I am NOT making this up!!) I experienced some really intersting recovery the most notable being....my stooped posture improved and I regaiined use of my right arm .This was followed by a memorable visionary experience of seeiing a monster representing "death" that I had named "Parkinsons" losing its' grip on my heart. (That experience alone was worth the whole journey ) Some would argue this whole experience would fall very conveniently into the (still mysterious) "placebo" category...which suggests that only those with the visionary eyes to ~see can succeed. The cold fusion experiment with Champion, Dr. Bockris and their team would suffer the same problem...that of skeptics looking for proof unable to repeat the experiment. However- the Parkinsons community is "seeing" evidence of previous concepts that the dopaminergic neurons are in some cases not necrotic (perhaps dormant) bubble up. in this thick soup of reality we are all entangled in...and ..that neurogenesis in the substantia niigra and striatum (raising the question -where else?) does indeed occur!

"In this issue of PNAS, Zhao et al. (1) provide the first experimental evidence that self-repair mechanisms may operate also in the adult substantia nigra. The results suggest that dopamine neurons are constantly turned over, they die and are replaced at a very low rate (20 new cells per day). Perhaps the most intriguing result is that a significant portion of the new neurons seemed to reestablish the connection to the striatum. Also, that rate of replacement doubles when the mature dopamine neurons were deleted by the toxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine. These new data are exciting because if neurogensis occurs also in the human substantia nigra it would have important implications both for the cell replacement strategy and for the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. Progression of this disorder would then be determined not only by the rate of degeneration of substantia nigra neurons but also on the efficacy in the formation of new dopamine neurons. Cell therapeutic interventions might involve both transplantation and stimulation of the endogenous neurogenic response. However, it is important to emphasize that other investigators have failed to detect nigral neurogenesis. Lie et al. (21) found that the adult rat substantia nigra contains a population of progenitors, but they only gave rise to glial cells in situ. The reason for this discrepancy is currently unclear" - Notice the name of "Lie" reference.......hmmmmm

anyway...15 years later I've seen symptoms come and go....some get worse some recovered from really well ...some new ones appear....makes me thin k of a line of wisdom my father imparted to my Mercurial spirit a very long time ago standing in a mountain meadow staring at the heavens....."The ONLY guarantee that exists in the universe is Change" ... thankfully!! What is more powerful than an idea whose time has arrived?

Yours ....truly,
MD

My father had a "saying" for nearly every occasion. The one you mention reminds me of my father's: nothing never changes.
