Exercise group for Parkinson's patients to start

(September 5, 2007) — The Jewish Community Center is now hosting the Parkinson Support Group of Upstate NY’s group exercise classes for people at various stages of Parkinson’s disease. You don’t have to be a JCC member to participate.

Studies show that physical activity may slow down the progression of the neurological condition.

“It is particularly important to practice balance and posture to help prevent falls,” says Tara Palmer, one of the instructors of “Stretching the Limits.”

“Stretching the Limits” includes moves adapted from physical therapy, pilates, karate, t’ai chi, stability ball and resistance tubing classes, all aimed at improving flexibility of the lower back and hip flexors, body awareness, posture, and balance.

The eight-week sessions start next week and cost $100 for 16 classes.

Classes are offered:
  • 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.
  • 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Sign up and get a physician’s consent form to participate by visiting the JCC or calling Palmer, (585) 461-2000, ext. 291.
