Parkinson's Goggles

10/05/2007 - CINCINNATI (Ivanhoe Broadcast News)  About 1.5 million people in the United States are living with Parkinson's disease, which is characterized by tremors and shuffled walking.
Now, researchers at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio are trying to determine whether specially-designed goggles can help patients walk better.

Jack Rose loves to exercise, but like 40 percent of Parkinson's patients, he has great difficulty walking. Rose's disability motivated him to try out a pair of experimental Parkinson's goggles. When patients look through the goggles, they see a checkerboard grid in front of them and step over the patterns.

"After I used them for awhile, I could tell a difference in my ability to walk," Rose says.
