Default South Wales: A NEWPORT charity for Parkinson's sufferers appealing for new members...

A NEWPORT charity for Parkinson's sufferers is appealing for new members, and is hoping to stage a fundraising concert.

Michael Backhouse, welfare and fundraiser for the local branch of Parkinson's Disease Sufferers, is looking for sponsorship or donations from local businesses, help with transport and a venue capable of housing up to 500 people.

He said: "We are looking to put on a concert in the New Year, preliminary figures indicate that we will have to find around about £1,500.

"You may know or be aware of someone who suffers from Parkinson's disease as it is extremely common and can strike at anytime.

"It is a disease that knows no barriers, attacking all age groups whether fit or unfit.

"There are 17 PDS branches throughout South Wales serving a mere 20 per cent of the known sufferers.

"The Newport Branch boasts 60 members, so you can see the size of the problem, we need to do more to reach those who are isolated."

The group meets at 7.30pm on the last Wednesday of the month, at the Springfield Centre at St Woolos Hospital.

Anyone who can help can call Mr Backhouse on 07967 322568.
