I thought it might be a good idea to post the words to the song. I wrote it for our grandchildren. On Christmas Eve we dance around the tree, holding hands, and sing Christmas songs. Our children speak Danish, and can sing the Danish songs, but the grandchildren can't. We sing the English Christmas songs and carols, but our only Solstice song is in Danish. I like to remember that Solstice has been celebrated long before Christmas was. I like to think of the sun turning back to us on that one, special day and night, so I wrote this Solstice song.
I had imagined the melody as the usual da daa da daa of 'I saw three ships' or 'Noel, Noel'...When Harley said she'd written the melody, that was what I expected. And then this afternoon I called Harley and heard my song transformed to a thing of beauty. I am completely bowled over by the way it sounds, by the way Harley sings it. I did not know that it would fit such beautiful music. Harley doesn't just sing my song, she interprets it so very beautifully. THANK YOU HARLEY. SOLSTICE On the shortest day each year in our northern hemisphere The winter sky is grey and bleak The winter sun so pale and weak Is late to rise and soon to bed In her golden winter sled. Her canopy of rosy clouds gives way to night and icy crowds Of stars and constellations. She does not linger here, instead She brings the antipodes her light For they have day while we have night and summer weather warm and bright for christmas celebrations. While penguins frolic down below We have night and frost and snow. Polar bears won’t see the sun Until winter’s dark is gone But tonight the sun will start Her return to our part Of the world and here she’ll stay. Linger longer every day Growing strong and warm and red Early rise and late to bed she will banish dark and cold and make winter lose its hold. That is what the christmas tree green and beautiful to see In the midst of winter drear Promises us every year Spring will not forget to spring All the little birds will sing There’ll be butterflies and flowers bright long days and summer showers. And the polar bears will play in the endless light of day birte |

these words are magical. they make the reader want to play with the polar bears. birte so captured the essence of tradition lost to grownups with the innosense of a grandmas love that it was very easy for me to continue with the flow of the feeling. it took me about 1/2 hour to come up with the melody. just hearing birte laugh with joy as she heard my rendition brought the song full circle. yes, this is christmas time . it is time to feel good.
THANK YOU birte, for putting the wonder and sparkle of Christmas back in this heart.

I love the solstice (both winter and summer), and am glad that I live in a place far enough north where I can really experience the difference. Laura & Birte - what a wonderful collaboration! Thank you!

Having lived in Scandinavia for nearly 6 years, I am well aware of the solstice. During the winter months, the sun didn't rise until nearly 10:00 a.m. and would set pretty near 2:00 p.m. If I remember correctly, we lost close to six minutes a DAY!!! The kids would go to school in the pitch black and come home in it as well. The school actually handed out reflectors for the kids to put on their clothing.
The summer months were the exact opposite and we actually have photos of us roasting marshmallows on the beach at midnight. Many people had a hard time sleeping during the summer months (not me!), and needed black out curtains. I do think that being a teacher would be difficult. I can't tell you how often we would be playing croquet, baseball, basketball or riding our bikes and I would look at the clock and realize that it was w-a-y past our children's bedtimes and I can't help but think that I couldn't have been the only parent sending their children to school so exhausted. To me, the 20 hours of sunlight during the summer months do not make up for the 20 hours of darkness during the winter months. I mean, you can only enjoy those sunlight hours so long and then you have to 1) go to work, 2) go to school 3) go shopping (and the stores aren't open at 1:00 a.m.!) Depression during the winter months has long been noted and I knew many people that were affected in that way. So, call me what you may - a spoiled American who enjoys "normal" hours 12 months a year. I can see why it would be special to those who grew up that way .. but I ain't one of them! By the way, I put down Houston (TX) just as readily so I hope that you friends realize that I am not picking on anyone personally.
