A friend and I were talking about how much publicity breast cancer has gotten through the pink ribbon campaign. There are even pink ribbons on cans of Campbell's soups! I told her we PWP's need to have a ribbon so we could get more public support. We jokingly chose a gray ribbon, since gray hair is what most people would expect people with PD to have. But, no, gray was already taken by another illness. We decided to try "silver" and much to my surprise, I found the article below. Who knew we PWP's were represented by silver ribbons?! Not me and I've been diagnosed with PD for over 11 years. I know about the yellow and red Parkinson's tulip, but the silver ribbon was a surprise. Worldwide, hundreds of millions of individuals and their families are impacted by the consequences of brain disorders and related disabilities.

The Silver Ribbon Coalition represents the combined interests of all those who are affected by a brain disorder or disability. To date, the Coalition is represented by advocates for and individuals with anxiety disorders, autism, brain cancer, brain injuries, depressive disorders, mental health, myelin disorders, Parkinson's disease, OCD, psychotic disorders, and rare birth defects. Ultimately, the Silver Ribbon Coalition will be represented by advocates for individuals with all types of brain disorders and disabilities.

The Silver Ribbon Campaign for the Brain promotes public awareness of the need for emotional, social, governmental, and research support of these individuals. Increasing public awareness will decrease stigma and increase support to result in improved treatment and eventual cures for those affected.

When I was at the congress in Washington DC two years ago I picked up a metal pin "ribbon" from one of the booths. It was a sort of ugly grey green. I have it tacked on the collar of my Jacket and it says "Parkinsons" right across the front of it. I've never seen another, nor can I remember who was giving them out. Anyone else have one???

I have one of the gray lapel pins, but it just doesn't mean anything to me.

However a pwp designed an awesome symbol for PD. Since a red tulip is a symbol for PD, she designed this. I'm hoping if we give it visibility maybe one day it will catch on and we'll all have pins from this design.

Jeanb...the tulip design pin...and certainly feel that, in and of itself, would be eye-catching...something that others would be inclined to inquire about...a lot more appealing than the silver or gray pins. I hope that the tulip pin will eventually become a reality...and aside from its being significant of PD, it is truly beautiful.

Thank you! I am trying - I hope we can get funding for this pin for April awareness in Arizona next year. And eventually my dream is that the pin design will spread across the country to other PD groups.

Jean, I really like the tulip pin as shown above too. And wouldn't it look great gracing the labels of Campbell's soup?!

I'm just kidding about the soup cans, of course, but I do think the pink ribbon campaign has done an awesome job of increasing the public's awareness of breast cancer and think PD could benefit from the same type of mass exposure.

Good luck with funding the creation of the pin as you've shown it. I would certainly want to buy one when they're available.

jean, have you found some place to make the pins?

i found some sites. one was reccomended. a friend used them for pins for vacation bible school. i'll post the links if you haven't found one.
