Arrow Stress Natural Treatment - the Ayurvedic approach

introduction:

Ayurveda is an ancient healing system from India that dates back some 5,000 years or more. It encompasses a wide range of techniques to treat illness and encourage general wellbeing, including:

Herbs
Yoga
Acupuncture, also called marmapuncture
Diet
Breathing exercises
Massage.
Translated from Sanskrit,
Ayurveda means 'the science of life'. The central philosophy is that the mind and body are one and the same, and that physical health can't be achieved without emotional, mental and spiritual health.

Since Ayurveda is only now gaining some popularity in the West, the number of scientific studies has been small. From the evidence so far, it seems that the Ayurvedic approach can be effective in treating a number of disorders, including digestive problems and allergies.

In Ayurveda, stress can induce an imbalance of vata, pitta and kapha, depending on the person’s constitution.

Vata persons under stress have reactions that include fearfulness, anxiety, anxiety neurosis and even phobias.

Pitta people get increased pitta during stressful situations and become angry. They may have peptic ulcer, hypertension, ulcerative colitis and other pitta disorders.

Kapha individuals may get increased blood sugar that may result diabetes, underactive thyroid function, slow metabolism, overeating habits that may lead to obesity.

· Relax
Learn to take a break and relax.Take long, deep breaths and stay calm and cool to prevent stress build up during potential stressful situations. Give yourself a massage. Use a few drops of warm oil and rub on your body, from head to toe.

Vata persons should use: sesame oil
Pitta person should use: sunflower oil
Kapha persons should use: corn oil

Take a hot shower after your massage. You can also benefit from positive imagery, chanting, praying and even singing. Meditation and regular yoga exercises are just as effective to reduce and remove your stress.

· Monitor your negative thoughts
Fear is always why people have stress. When you have negative thoughts, look at them and replace them with positive ones. Changing your perception and attitude can alleviate much of the stress. Be more optimistic.

· Stress analysis
Set apart all the stressful things in your life into two categories. The first category are things you can do something about and the other, the things you cannot. If there is a solution, get it done, if not, accept defeat and seek help. If help is unavailable, surrender to it and find peace.

· Examine your purpose and objectives
Find the right balance between your personality and your job. When work and personality are not appropriately matched, job stress can become unbearable. When you love what you do at work, there will be no stress, otherwise, it can be a burden.

Find your true objectives and goal and find comfort and joy in your work.

Below are some Ayurveda remedies to help you deal with stress:

· Cry
If grief and sadness is casuing you stress, give yourself a good cry is a great way of releasing tension and stress.

Lightbulb insomnia? read this please -research this also -never take any one persons word -

Insomnia is caused basically by an increase of vata dosha in the mind or nervous system. It can also be a cause or a complicating factor in other problems related to constipation, stress, fatigue and could be a symptom of depression, and may heighten depression. Perhaps that’s enough reason to deal with insomnia effectively.

· Relaxing and massaging remedies

Hot Bath
Before going to bed, take a hot shower or bath helps to soothe vata and promote a sound and restful sleep. Add some relaxing aromatherapy oil like lavender in the bath if you like.

Warm Oil massage
Try getting a relaxing head or sole massage before bedtime, it may be all you need to induce sleep. Rub some oil on the scalp or the soles of the feet with slightly warm oil. Massage gently. Use any of the following oil:

- sesame oil
- jatamamsi oil
- brahmi oil

Nutmeg Eye Pack
Nutmeg is a common spice used to encourage sleep. All you need is some ghee and nutmeg powder to make a fine paste. Mix them well and apply the paste around the eyes and on the forehead just before going to bed. This helps you to ‘doze off’.

· Food Remedies
You may have heard mom say ‘ a glass of warm milk will send you to bed’. And it is indeed true that taking warm milk before bedtime encourages a peaceful rest. Take it plain or add some almonds or nutmeg for a more effective and delicious drink.

· Almond milk
Add some crushed almonds, a pinch of cardamom or nutmeg into the warm milk. You can grind them before adding to the liquid.

· Nutmeg in Milk
If you like it simple, just sprinkle some nutmeg, about 1/8 teaspoon, into a cup of warm milk.

· Milk & Garlic
If you don’t mind the pungent aroma, mix 1 cup of milk with a clover of fresh garlic, chopped, and ¼ cup of water. Boil over a small flame til 1 cup of the garlic milk is left.

· Soothing Chamomile
Tea can also have a soothing effect. The most popular for inducing sleep is chamomile tea.

· Herbal Formula
Here’s another effective drink to help you sleep better. You need:

1 part chamomile
1 part tagar
1 part valerian root powder

Add ¼ teaspoon of this powder mixture to some water and drink it just before going to bed.

· Tomato Juice
For a tangy drink before bedtime, take 1 cup of tomato juice with some natural sugar (according to taste) and a pinch of nutmeg. Take this drink around 4pm to 5pm and have dinner between 6pm and 7pm. It may be a little different but it should lullaby you to sleep soundly.

· Dreamy Cherries
You would have never thought that a bowl of cherries can get you set for a restful sleep. Cherries are great for relieving stress and mental fatigue, and a daily dosage of 10 to 20 cherries can help fight these conditions and send you on cloud nine, fast asleep. If you like, take it with some warm milk.

· Yoga Exercise
Meditation just before going to bed can help dispel sleep disturbances due to woe and anxieties that keep the mind occupied and difficult to relax and prepare for sleep. Try this exercise:

Sit in a comfortable position on your bed and put attention to your “third eye” – the area on your forehead between the eyes. Listen to your breathing and follow it inhale and exhale, or you can do the traditional So-Hum meditation. Think of the syllable “So” and when you exhale, think of “Hum”. Next lie on your back and continue with the breathing, focusing your mind on the “third eye”.

If you have a jetlag and find it hard to sleep, it’s usually a result of excess vata in the body. Ayurveda recommends this three step remedy to avoid jet lag:

· Swallow 2 capsules of ginger (00 size) with water an hour before flying off.

· On the plane, try to drink at least 3 cups of water, at intervals of 1 to 2 hours. Dehydration increases vata so drinking water is better than cafffeinated beverages.

· Upon arrival at your destination, if you reach there before nightfall: try drinking chamomile tea with equal portions of mint and jatamamsi (1/3 teaspoon jatamamsi). Steep in hot water for a bout 10 minutes. Served with your favourite biscuits or sandwiches, or drink it on it’s own.

· If you arrive before night, drink a cup of hot milk with a pinch of ginger and nutmeg, or rub your head with some warm sesame oil on the scalp and soles of your feet. When you arrive at your destination, you will fall asleep with ease at bedtime.

Arrow constipation? - way to go... *grin

The best way to prevent constipation is by keeping vata in balance since it is a vata condition, according to Ayurveda.

Vata-pacifying diet
Follow the vata balancing diet to prevent constipation. Moderate intake of oil in your diet helps but stay away from dried fruits, salads, most beans and cold foods and drinks. Add more well cooked vegetables, warm drinks and food in your diet.

· More fibre
Take more fiber like whole grains, oatmeal, oat bran, wheat bran and vegetables. They are great help in keeping a regular bowel.

Fruity Power
Take fruits between meals to aid digestion and help constipation.

· Banana snacks
Bananas are natural mild laxative. Take two ripe yellow bananas after meals, perhaps for afternoon tea, will help relieve constipation. However, do not combine bananas at mealtimes.

Take only ripe bananas as green ones give constipation. Also avoid over ripe bananas with blackened skin. A ripe banana should have bright yellow skin and its flesh is studded with small black dots.

· Apple
The humble apple is great for regulating the bowels. There is indeed truth in the old adage: an apple a day, keep the doctor away. It also help clean the teeth and tongue. Peel and chew on the apple for an hour after meal.

· Peaches
Take one or two peaches about an hour after meal.

· Raisins and prunes
Prunes or a handful of raisins every day too can be effective in preventing constipation. Take them an hour after meals.

· Pineapple juice
Have some pineapple juice. It is effective in regulating the bowels.

· Flaxseed
Take this remedy at night. Boil 1 tablespoon of flaxseed in a cup of water for 2 to 3 minutes and drink everything, seeds and tea.

· Ghee and Milk
This gentle but effective way of relieving constipation is good for both vata and pitta individuals with constipation. Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of ghee to a cup of hot milk and drink at bedtime.

· Triphala drink
This triphala combination of herbal drink is probably the best Ayurveda cure for constipation for all dosha types: pitta, vata and kapha.

Add ½ to 1 teaspoon of triphala to a cup of hot water, steep for 5 to 10 minutes and drink. It may have a diuretic effect on some people. If this is so, steep triphala overnight and drink it first thing in the morning when you get up so you don’t have to disrupt your sleep getting up a few times to urinate.

For children with constipation:

· Figs
Soak 3 figs in warm water and drink.

For pregnant women:

· Sat isabgol with milk
Take one teaspoon of sat isabgol also known as psyllium husk, with a glass of warm milk

Ghee and milk is also good for reliving constipation for expectant women. DO NOT take castor oil or any drastic purgatives like triphala as it would irritate the unborn child and make the baby hyperactive.

Aid for severe constipation:

· Triphala tea or dashamoola enema
Using drastic purgatives when constipation is severe can cause an intestinal obstruction, or perforation which is dangerous. It is safer to do an enema with plain water or use triphala or dashamoola tea to regulate bowel movements.

· Castor Oil and ginger tea
For really severe constipation, take castor oil with ginger tea before bedtime. Boil some freshly, sliced ginger in water or add some powdered ginger to a cup of hot water. Add 2 – 4 teaspoons of castor oil, according to desired result, to the tea and drink. Adjust the dose to what works for you.

Some people may have a dependency on castor oil. However, it can still be effective in regulating a good bowel movement without creating a dependency. Take only 2 teaspoons of castor oil with a cup of warm milk.

Because you may need more time going to the toilet, it is best to take this treatment during the weekends at home.

Just for prevention:
To prevent constipation, try the following:

· Keep a vata-pacifying diet
· Take lots of warm plain water, 4= 5 glasses each day and add juice or tea if you like
· Take a lot of fiber
· Exercise regularly
· Yoga exercises like nauli can be helpful
· Yoga asanas like the Sun Salutation, Chest-Knee pose, and Leg Lift can also help prevent constipation
