Study: L-DOPA side effects can be blocked
http://it.moldova.org/stiri/eng/93099/ U.S. and Swedish studies showed side effects caused by repeated use of the drug L-DOPA can be minimized by blocking the serotonin 1B receptor. The finding by scientists at Rockefeller University and the Karolinska Institute suggests targeting the 1B receptor might provide an alternative approach for treating advanced Parkinson's disease and its associated tremors, rigidity and impaired movements. The researchers determined serotonin -- a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood, appetite, sexuality and sleep -- also plays a crucial role in Parkinson's disease. Using a mouse model of the disease, the scientists found side effects associated with repeated L-DOPA treatment can be blocked by manipulating a specific serotonin receptor. That, they said, might lead to new treatments for the disorder, which is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's. The finding is detailed in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
