Arrow Colony Collapse Disorder - Soy tie to the BEE die-off... Dr. Kaayla Daniel

Colony Collapse Disorder:
Soy Tie to Bee Die-Off?
By Kaayla Daniel, PhD, CCN

http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/soy-ccd.html#author

Honeybees are going missing from their hives and no one knows why. The missing bees are presumed dead though investigators have yet to find bodies to autopsy. The phenomenon—labeled Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)—has appeared in at least 22 states and Canada, and to a lesser extent in Germany, Switzerland and India. Beekeepers have reported losses as high as 70 percent on the east coast and in Texas, and as high as 60 percent on the west coast. The U.S. beekeeping industry—and the farmers that depend on bees —are in turmoil as bees are desperately needed to pollinate fourteen billion dollars worth of crops, mostly fruits, vegetables and nuts. Major media from the NY Times to the BBC have been abuzz with bad news of future food shortages and economic ramifications that will "sting."1-7

Return to Monsanto Investing News web page.

First official results of the global experiment are in - soya allergies dramatically increased in the last year. Prime suspect - GM soya! Stand up Monsanto - where is your insurance??? We wait eagerly for the Health Ministers rebuttal. York Nutritional Laboratory has had a busy day on the phone, but if the media in your country want to follow this up they are happy to be contacted.

Daily Express 12 March 99
Why soya is a hidden destroyer

Exclusive by Mark Townsend

Fresh fears over the safety of genetically modified foods surfaced faced yesterday after new research revealed that food allergies relating to soya Increased by 50 per cent last year. A study by Europe's leading specialists on food sensitivity found health complaints caused by soya - the ingredient most associated with GM foods - have increased from 10 in 100 patients to 15 in 100 over the past year. Researchers at the York Nutritional Laboratory said their findings provide real evidence that GM food could have a tangible, harmful impact on the human body.

The findings were sent to Health Secretary Frank Dobson last night as scientists urged the Government to act on the information and impose an instant ban on GM food, while further safety tests are carried out. Dr Michael Antoniou, senior lecturer in molecular pathology at Guy's Hospital, Central London,, said: "This is a very interesting if slightly worrying, development. "It points to the fact that far more work is needed to assess their safety. At the moment no allergy tests are carried out before GM foods are marketed and that also needs to be looked at."

John Graham, spokesman for the York laboratory, said: "We believe this raises serious new questions about the safety of GM foods because it is impossible to guarantee that the soya used in the tests was GM-free." It is the first time in 17 years of testing that soya has crept into the laboratory's top 10 foods to cause an allergic reaction in consumers. The vegetable has moved up four places to ninth end now sits alongside foodstuffs with a long history of causing allergies, such as yeast, sunflower seeds and nuts.

Mr. Graham said researchers tested 4,500 people for allergic reactions to vegetables including soya. Among the range of chronic illnesses it caused were irritable bowel syndrome, digestiontion problems and skin complaints including acne and eczema.

"People also suffered neurological problems with chronic fatigue syndrome, headaches and lethargy. It is worrying," Mr Graham added. Researchers measured the levels of antibodies in a person's blood. If increased levels were detected it showed the person suffered an adverse reaction to a particular food.

Soya, the wonder crop of the 20th century is found in 60 per cent of all processed foods sold in the UK - from bread to baby food, ready-to-eat curries to vegetarian lasagne. But because GM and natural soya are mixed at source in America - the world's biggest supplier - it has become increasingly difficult for retailers to guarantee the purity of any products.

Last month campaigners from Greenpeace dumped four tons of GM soya beans from America at the gates of Downing Street in protest. The Consumers' Association yesterday renewed its demand for the Government to investigate the safety of GM foods. A spokesman said: "We just don't know what health problems could arise in the future. Waitrose yesterday announced that it would be stocking its own-label GM-free foods by the end of the month. Managing director David Felwick said: "We believe customers should be able to make an informed choice about the products they are buying."

Thumbs down 2008 Monsanto & Syngenta share profits?

Market Scan
Syngenta And Monsanto Settle And Share
Laura Myers 05.23.08, 12:45 PM ET

http://tinyurl.com/4bb9wl - Forbes link to more monsanto money

LONDON - When it comes to cashing in on rising food prices and increased planting, agrochemical giants Syngenta and Monsanto have decided that two heads are better than one.

The companies announced Friday that they had settled all outstanding litigation related to their corn and soybean technologies and agreed to share licenses for their respective herbicide-tolerant and insect-protection products, clearing the way for faster product development.

U.S.-based Monsanto and Swiss-based Syngenta, both makers of pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified seeds, had brought patent infringement cases against each other on their corn and soybean technologies, with Syngenta even taking antitrust action against Monsanto.

But instead of fighting over products, the companies have agreed to swap technologies. Monsanto will receive a royalty-bearing license to Syngenta’s dicamba herbicide tolerance.

Syngenta, in turn, will receive a royalty-bearing license to Monsanto’s Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean technology and get more favorable marketing conditions for its Bt11 European corn borer control.

Shares of Monsanto were down 2.0% at $118.90 in mid-day trading in New York, while Syngenta had dipped 0.5% to $61.45.

Helvea analyst Martin Flueckiger told Forbes.com said that the agreement was positive for Syngenta, as it would enhance market opportunities for the company and reduce costly and time-consuming litigations.

“Overall, I’d say it’s favorable not only for both participants in the agreement, but also for farmers worldwide,” Flueckiger said. “It helps get rid of further delays of new technology launches to the market.”

Syngenta and Monsanto have seen sales and profits boom as food shortages around the world have spurred farmers to buy their products and grow more crops. Syngenta saw first quarter sales rise 28%, while Monsanto said its earnings jumped to $1.1 billion in 2007 from $543 million the previous year. (See: “Syngenta Makes Sales Grow,” “Monsanto’s Record Isn’t Enough”)

With demand for biofuels also rising, both companies have corn trait offerings in their pipelines that aim to produce drought-tolerant, higher-yielding and high-oil corn. Syngenta said that from 2009, it would work to develop a corn amylase for more efficient biofuel production, and Monsanto is planning to launch SmartStax corn, which will have eight genetic modifications, in 2010.

Lightbulb Green Peace say NO to genetic engineering -

http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/genetic-engineering#

While scientific progress on molecular biology has a great potential to increase our understanding of nature and provide new medical tools, it should not be used as justification to turn the environment into a giant genetic experiment by commercial interests. The biodiversity and environmental integrity of the world's food supply is too important to our survival to be put at risk.

Genetic engineering enables scientists to create plants, animals and micro-organisms by manipulating genes in a way that does not occur naturally.
These genetically modified organisms (GMO) can spread through nature and interbreed with natural organisms, thereby contaminating non 'GE' environments and future generations in an unforeseeable and uncontrollable way.

Their release is 'genetic pollution' and is a major threat because GMOs cannot be recalled once released into the environment.

Because of commercial interests, the public is being denied the right to know about GE ingredients in the food chain, and therefore losing the right to avoid them despite the presence of labelling laws in certain countries.

Biological diversity must be protected and respected as the global heritage of humankind, and one of our world's fundamental keys to survival. Governments are attempting to address the threat of GE with international regulations such as the Biosafety Protocol.

We believe:

GMOs should not be released into the environment as there is not adequate scientific understanding of their impact on the environment and human health.

We advocate immediate interim measures such as labelling of GE ingredients, and the segregation of genetically engineered crops and seeds from conventional ones.
