I just went through all of this in California...don't know if it's different in NY. My husband and I were on COBRA through end of February. I was able to get individual insurance for myself under HIPAA with Blue Cross and separate insurance also with Blue Cross for my husband and daughter. My deductible is high and I have to pay quite a bit for Azilect, but I'm happy I'm covered for doctor visits and if something major happens. We're paying less with Blue Cross than with COBRA but the high deductible is why. I had to provide proof of COBRA ending with no extension possibilities and proof that his old work wouldn't cover us. He's getting his teaching credential and hopefully will get a job this August. Hope this helps somehow!

for your fallback option of relocation.
http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Healthcare/E...able/DH_074373 I never cease to marvel at how the worlds richest economy and last remaining superpower can drive its sick to contemplate such extremes. If you need any other help just ask. Good luck, Neil. |

Social security looks at these three things: do you have a disability? Are you earning less than what they list as substantial gainful wages, do you have enough work credits. From what I've read you seem to meet the criteria for PD. Do you have a doctor that will support your decision/application? Simply put I feel that you should apply for the SSDI. Drop your earnings down to below the SGA if you're not already there. It's not that you can't earn, you can't make more than what they list as the SGA. Get this going now rather than when you really are in bad shape. Then you will be eligible for Medicare after the waiting period, I thought it was 1 year. Anyway this is what I feel your best bet is. You can still teach the classes, I suspect this is more an isssue of self-pride than the employer situation. Being disabled does not mean you are an invalid. Believe me when you start collecting benefits and then qualify for medicare you will have alot less stress and you will be thankful that you did.. I admit it is hard to go through the process and it takes time but I think it is your best bet. Lotsa luck!
