"Accidental Fungus" May Provide Cancer Cure

(Washington, D.C.)—Lodamin is a drug developed using nanotechnology and a fungus—Aspergillus fumigatus fresenius—that accidentally contaminated a lab experiment. Researchers believe it will prove to be "broadly effective" against a host of cancers. (Reuters Photo)

According to a Reuter's report, the late cancer researcher Dr. Judah Folkman, pioneered the idea of angiogenesis therapy—starving tumors by preventing them from growing blood supplies—and lodamin appears to do just that.

Folkman's colleagues were quoted as saying the drug is in pill form and has no apparent side effects.

Drug trials were extremely successful. "I had never expected such a strong effect on these aggressive tumor models," said Ofra Benny of Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School.

The report also states that researchers believe Lodamin may also be useful in other diseases marked by abnormal blood vessel growth, such as age-related macular degeneration.
