Splanton - what a great reference! especially since it is 40 years after Chicago (there is a group called "re-create 68" planning events at the upcoming DNC convention in Denver).

Would it be possible for you or someone on your staff to hold a training session on skills and strategies for e-patients, covering group dynamics and small group leadership and whatever else would be important for us to learn? Instead, or in addition, would you please point us to articles you have written, or talks you have given, for in-depth study? I, for one, have need of such wisdom.

You might take this quick and dirty search and plg it into Google (cut and paste): "patient advocates" "group dynamics" Parkinson* There isn't that much out there...If you click on the " repeat the search with the omitted results included.", more shows up, including quite a collection of German studies... I have actually had training in Group Dynamics - in the field of Industrial Psychology.
Here are a few things I found after doing a quick search. There is much more out there. Jeanb-
Thanks! I'd been playing around with terms but hadn't hit on the "industrial psychology" by myself... As a "newbie", I can testify to the utility of PLM, simply because it IS "fluff" and "social". Many of the participants seem to come from smaller communities, with little in the way of support systems or coping mechanisms--the PLM site fills a REAL need here, IMHO, providing nonjudgemental contacts and support. Now, whether there are "hidden agendas" on the part of those who actually manage the site, that might be another matter and one I haven't encountered, yet.
PLM provides a boost for many up the Maslow Triangle; whether they turn into "leaders" or not, at least they can feel better about themselves and their predicaments. Stan Quote:

PLM is an odd place, I will grant that.
I describe NT as the intellectual board. The place where the advocates of the PD community come. PLM is the social board. While I see topics flourish in NT, as this thread has done, in PLM this topic very quickly becomes dead in the water. I have attempted to foster advocacy, etc., but it not going to happen in PLM. There is little interest in PAN, for example. I do agree with Stan that PLM does serve a purpose. Many there have found PLM as their first stop in meeting other PWPs. They come there and find a voice and a place to share and ask. I have suggested NT to a few by Private Message, but none have taken the suggestion to come in here to NT.

i asked Doc John about communication on this project and part of his reply was:
"You can try the Social Groups feature here and create a private social group. They have their own sort of message-like board. If that's not sufficient, I can go ahead and create a private forum for this group... just let me know." He also said he uses a freeconferencecall.com site to group conference. i didn't know about it - have been graciously provided for through pipeline project for 3 years with conference call access (cough) but we burned up many lines - used it for countless advocacy projects. paula
