Can Differentiate between Parkinson's and Parkinson's-like Diseases at Early Stages

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 6, 2006--Power3 Medical Products, Inc. (OTCBB: PWRM - News), said today it has discovered 11 biomarkers which have demonstrated the ability to identify Parkinson's disease in its early stages through serum-based testing, as well as differentiate between Parkinson's and Parkinson's-like diseases. A leading proteomics company, Power3 Medical (www.Power3Medical.com) is developing proteomic testing and biomarker discovery for early detection, monitoring, and staging of a broad range of diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

Steven B. Rash, the CEO of Power3, said the new biomarkers were identified in patient samples as part of an analysis of data conducted during the company's on-going clinical validation study.

"During the study, Power3 and our international partners will further explore, evaluate, strengthen, and confirm the validity of these markers," Mr. Rash said. The study, he said, will encompass some 500 samples in all, and is being conducted in cooperation with a major European research institution and a leading expert in the study of Neurodegenerative diseases.

This is the second major announcement by Power3 in recent days, with the company having previously reported on a breakthrough in the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease through a new application of previously identified biomarkers (see "Power3's Biomarkers 'Show Great Promise' for Alzheimer's Diagnostics and Therapeutics," Business Wire, August 30, 2006).

Earlier Detection = Earlier Treatment

"The new protein biomarkers identified by Power3 represent a promise for early detection and identification of Parkinson's," Mr. Rash said. "And with earlier detection - and differentiation from Parkinson's-like diseases - should come earlier and more effective treatment."

Mr. Rash said that despite what he called "tremendously increased awareness of Parkinson's disease in the U.S. and worldwide, there are currently no diagnostic tests on the market for its early detection.

"These newly identified biomarkers add to Power3's ever-expanding biomarker portfolio," he said. "They have the potential to offer unique insights into the Parkinson's disease mechanism, and may provide great insight to improve the clinical outcomes of Parkinson's patients." Mr. Rash said the new biomarkers may have the potential to be used as targets for the development of new therapeutic drugs.

"The identification of these biomarkers and their early promise supports Power3's strategic plan and vision," he said. "Power3 will continue to focus on raising industry and public awareness of our proprietary technologies, which provide new opportunities for early detection and diagnostic markets. Power3 is continuing to forge relationships with U.S. and foreign companies, who we anticipate will become our partners in the worldwide commercialization of these and other Power3-developed diagnostic tests."
