Abstract
Symptomatic respiratory disturbance as a consequence of levodopa (L-dopa) therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD) has been described only rarely and may be underrecognized in clinical practice. We report on two patients with PD in whom the introduction or augmentation of L-dopa therapy was associated with the development of irregular and rapid breathing. Analysis of breathing patterns before and after L-dopa demonstrated a striking change in respiratory rate after administration of L-dopa, with the emergence of irregular tachypnea alternating with brief periods of apnea, in a pattern consistent with a central origin. In both cases, the temporal relationship of the respiratory disturbance to the administration of L-dopa suggested a peak-dose drug effect. Previous reports of L-dopa-induced respiratory dyskinesia are reviewed, and the potential mechanisms whereby L-dopa might influence the central control of respiration to produce irregular breathing patterns are discussed.

Thanks Tina,

It keeps adding up..........maybe 'they' (those in the know) were afraid to tell us in great detail. I would have fell off my chair and would have had to be carried out. Looking back now, of course I would have done everything I could to stay off L-dopa. All the folks I know personally, who seem to do well, follow this philosophy.

I stopped reducing my dopamine until I get my spine and pd symptoms analyzed, and sorted out or which is what? My legs shake violently for various lengths of time and I have neurological symptoms of nerve problems. This seems to be confusing and no one knows what to do with me. I get referred so often it is beginning to be a circle. I'm right back where I started from. I'm not kidding.

Sorry Tina, this has changed into my usual rant of late. For everyone's sake (my friends and family) I do hope I get the help I need soon.

Bonnie

Heart dear bonnie,

I will pray for you - that doors open with cures / or miracles...
I have trouble getting a good breath sometimes, so hard to breathe
I lay across an ottoman (on my stomach with my knees on the floor and my head hanging over) hope you can picture what I am saying, cuz I can't photograph it / and wont...
this helps so I can stretch the abdominal muscles...
