I had my thyroid removed yesterday and the weirdest thing happened as I was waking up from the surgery. I had what can only be described as a dyskinetic fit which lasted about 5 minutes. Actually, they thought it was a seizure, but thank God, it wasn't. Anyone experience this? Why would that happen?
I would appreciate any input. |

I can't offer you an explanation, but events like this should give massive clues to researchers about PD.
There is a definite link to the "on" phase of PD and dyskinesia. You never get dyskinesia when "off", or at least I don't. But having said that, I am often off, and starting a meal, and as soon as I start chewing, I switch on and launch immediately into dyskinesia. I generally get dyskinesia towards the end of my medication. Then another strange thing, I occasionally switch on having had no medication. It can last around half an hour. But then I still get dyskinesia towards the end of the "on". So much for dyskinesia being due to excess levodopa. We should have a sticky thread for "Clues for researchers", to put this sort of information in. Ron PS How long have you had PD? Dyskinesia usually occurs in advanced sufferers (another clue)

some doctors give calcium to prevent this.
If it returns don't just attribute to PD. Parathyroid function gets disturbed when you have the thyroid surgery.

Ron, I've had PD for 8 years. I get it as soon as my meds start working and for most of the day.
