Default Whom to believe? Study: Virus injected into brain eases Parkinson’s in Japan

There is much research which benifits the researchers but not us ??

http://www.bostonherald.com/news/int...osition=recent

TOKYO - Jichi Medical University has succeeded in restoring the motor function of patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease by injecting their brains with a virus with a built-in gene that has an enzyme to produce dopamine.

Five out of six patients undergoing the first gene therapy in Japan have shown some recovery in their motor functions, the Shimotsuke, Japan-based university said.

One patient who had been unable to move showed remarkable signs of recovery, becoming able to perform normal daily activities, the hospital said
The university said it had confirmed the safety of the virus. Although the treatment is not ready to be used as a general therapy due to the few cases to date, the outcome has the potential to dramatically change the lives of Parkinson’s disease patients
The university research team incorporated a dopamine-producing enzyme within a virus and injected about 300 billion of the viruses into the brains of the six patients between May 2007 and September 2008. Six months later, five of them showed some motor function recovery.

Default doesn't it sound

A bit vague? Wouldn't you say? lol

nothing identified - just a virus and an enzyme. they really knocked themselves out identifying Parkinson's, but who knows? hope its better than the article~

thanks,
paula

Default Probably legit

This appears to be a secondary phase of a legitimate clinical trial in Japan at Jichi Medical University in Shimotsuke- trials began in 2007. Not to worry, here we may have access to the treatment, in say, twenty years?

Note: I think the reason it sounds "iffy" is due to fact that information on this is gleaned from sources in Japanese, so there very well may be things lost in the transliteration and translation of the journals and newspapers.

Gene Therapy for Parkinson's Disease

From Pub Med:

A clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of AAV vector-mediated gene transfer of aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, an enzyme that converts L-dopa to dopamine, is underway. With this strategy patients would still need to take L-dopa to control their PD symptoms, however, dopamine production could be regulated by altering the dose of L-dopa. Another AAV vector-based clinical trial is also ongoing in which the subthalamic nucleus is transduced to produce inhibitory transmitters.
