Default Any other health problems?

Did anyone have other health problems related to alcohol that resulted in the discovery of alcoholic neuropathy? I had pancreatitis and severe alcohol withdrawals. I was in the hospital for 15 days, 7 in ICU. It was not until I left the hospital and quit drinking that I noticed the symptoms that turned out to be PN. Do you really think alcohol kept me from having any symptoms? I wonder. It would be treated the same and I can't have alcohol nor do I want it, so I am not sure it really matters. I haven't had any improvement and I am closing in on two years without alcohol. I had every test possible and nothing was found. It's frustrating and sometimes it makes me wonder if there is something else I am missing or should do beside just quitting alcohol and adding a few supplements. Tired of the pain, but really enjoy being sober!

Hi cat1234

A year alcohol-free is a great achievement - well done !

Apart from that, I agree with what Wide-O wrote.

While I was spared the additional symptoms you had Okone, I also have had no improvement with nearly two years of (mostly) abstinence. I did quite knowingly drink beer for a time at the one year mark, but returned to abstinence as my symptoms just continued to degrade gradually. It is indeed frustrating and I think it is important to keep up the sobriety and be glad for the good health we otherwise have. I admire reports I see of progress, but it is important to note that response to sobriety and abstinence is highly variable. I also keep an eye on the encouraging research being done on this condition. But there is nothing on the near term horizon (as far as I know) so I try my best to live a full life and not think about this crap any more than necessary.

Heart

I am new here. Alcohol has brought me to my knees literally. My legs are so weak that I feel they will give out from under me. The burning, numbness, pins and needles.....you know the story. This is my last chance if I am going to have any resemblance of a life worth saving.
Mrs D and others, I just wish to stress that supplements must be entered into with caution. I did buy the Benfotiamine and had been taking them only to find out that with the type of cancer I had, this is a dangerous supplement. In an attempt to wellness and not being able to afford a naturopath I devised my own plan and ran things pass my oncologist, only to find out thru much research that I may be doing more hard than good given my specific issue so be mindful of that.
I commend you all for this wonderful site and a safe place to share. You help more than you know and even though many do not post, many lurk and gain much insight from your efforts.

Try not to stress about it too much either, as that would only make things worse (the effect stress has on my PN is staggering). You tried, it didn't work out, dust off and keep going.
Thank you. Yes I do feel even worse today but it is reassuring that it will subside. So I will try not to think about it and enjoy a good night of sleep as a side effect of this exhaustion!!

Smile 2 years!!!

Today is 2 years sober! Not a single sip! Thanks to everyone in this thread for sharing their stories and for the many words of encouragement. I plan to be around for long time and look forward to many more years of sobriety. It's kind of cool that I can now say "I haven't had a drink in years".

Thanks so much for the welcome! News town , when I was reading your posts I did think you sounded like you think how I think at times-- Some doctors have called it somaform (?) disorder or call it hypochondria , but it is included in OCD -- I've had other irrational thoughts that cause intense anxiety over the years. It's horrible, but I think the horrible part is the negative anxious mental ruminations affect us physically. I think the mind is so powerful because I can make symptoms happen by believing something is wrong---I just wish I could use that same brain power to heal myself! I watched that video that I think as posted by Mrs.D about the power of the mind to heal vs. conventional medicine and it is definitely worth watching. I listen to healing meditations and they do calm my anxiety. A calm positive mind is so important for healing.

Well, I wish my peripheral neuropathy WAS from hypochondria there, Bunnyluv, but yes, the role of the mind is very important. Have you had a nerve conduction test and the Emg , etc? That would help clear up, perhaps, if your symptoms are truly from alcohol abuse or are psychosomatic.

Hi, I hope I didn't make it sound like I thought your PN is psychosomatic
I know that you are suffering miserably from what you've written--I'm just saying when our thoughts turn to the worst possible scenario then it just makes symptoms feel worse and hard to believe it will get better. It's the old "What If?" monster: what if I never get better, what if this or that?
No I have not had a nerve condition test, but I know my symptoms are not all in my head because they started BEFORE I had heard about PN.....I never knew about it until I started having the pins and needles. However, if I had read about it then I would believe that I was making myself feel pain (although not this intense). I-- like you --wish that this was all anxiety based!
