Default Does Neurontin Help You?

I've just had my Neurontin doubled again, 1,200 MG 3xday. I've noticed no difference since I've started taking it. Does it help anyone else? It's pretty expensive (80 dollars for 180 of 600 mg after insurance). I've been on it for 6 months, no improvements. I've been tested now for Heavy Metals and 12 hour fasting glucose for the 2nd time and both are within normal limits

Joshua,
So sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. I'm taking a low dose of Neurontin (liquid), and it really isn't doing much for me. I might have mentioned in my other post that I tried to up the dose, but got severe headaches.
Have you tried asking your neurologist to switch to another medication?

Miriam

Hi
Aside from making me sleepy and feeling goofy, it did nothing for me. I take Cymbalta now, with much better results.

I use Topical Magnesium Oil for this kind of pain. I used to take Neurontin but couldn't stand the side effects(reflux, brainfog, sd, etc). Mag oil helps with pain, increases cellular ATP energy and helps with nerve function. I also use Gotu Kola(stimulates Gaba-like Neurontin and Acetylcholine-nerve rebuilding). Albeit you have to play with the dose, of these things, but they are much better for you and don't have the sides.

I have taken Neurontin for over a year and most recently was up to 3600 mg a day. I thought that maybe the PN had gotten a lot worse and that's why it didn't seem to be helping even though I was taking a higher and higher dose. But I've now stepped down to 600 mg a day on my way to 0 so I can switch to Cymbalta. Can't say that I feel any different at all on this comparatively low dose so it seems that it wasn't helping me at all.

Barb, I hope I have the same experience that you've had with the Cymbalta. I'm timing it to start after Thanksgiving just in case it makes my head weird--don't want to think about what I might do to the turkey if my brain isn't working right.

I was up to 4200mgs/day and finally switched to Lyrica.
(If you can tolerqate the Neurontin with little s/e- you probably will be OK with Lyrica - I was)
It has been working for me for the past 3 yrs now (200mgs, 3xday)
along with Tramadol (100 mgs 4xday)
Have you tried a pain med 'cocktail' along with your Neurontin ?

The combination works better than either of the meds alone, to treat for PN pain & symptoms.

I'm at 3,600 of Neurontin and 100 MG 4xday of Ultram. The ultram helps a bit, and neurontin not at all.

I talked to my neuro about Neurontin compared to Lyrica, he said Lyrica is 8x stronger than Neurontin. He said we can find the equiv. of Lyrica to Neurontin and it be close to the same ( I did take lyrica, TOO expensive, but it slightly helped)

I just don't feel any better at all!

I think when I run out of this supply I am going to go back to Lyrica, it worked great for me but I couldn't handle the 20lb weight gain. I am going to overcome being vain and control the pain better.

I was reluctant to try Lyrica because of the weight gain too, jannaw... I figured that help with gaining weight is not what I need..why is it that so many drugs make you gain weight? And very few that have loss as a side-effect? (I know, chemo, but I've had cancer, so please don't beat me up if you have too)

But now I seem to be losing weight without trying; I've lost about 15 lbs since June. Me, the chubby who has been on a diet since fifth grade without ever having any lasting success. Now I'm eating anything I want, a totally new experience for me. And before anyone asks, yes, I had the 3-hour glucose tolerance test, so it's not that. I know that there are no good reasons for this to happen, but there are so many of them, where would you even start looking for it?

Anyway, I do understand both your weight gain concern and your conclusion that it was better than the pain because I was about ready to go there myself until the most recent neuro suggested Cymbalta instead. Supposedly, it's doesn't have that side-effect. Not saying that you should try it or that you haven't tried it.
