As a many times a day viewer of the RSD site, I posted the following there, but I also wanted to take advantage of all the erudition present over here.

In a script I'm currently working on, I introduce one of the leads, who is bi polar and is in the midst of a hallacinatory peak, trampling through the streets like Robert Lowell used to do thinking he was Jesus, as "...a fading beauty with an etherial quality. Except her eyes. They burn."

Oh the irony. The intense burning has recently spread to my eyes.

I went yesterday, Saturday, and had my eyes checked out by my optomologist. As expected, all the structural parts are fine. It's just the small fiber nerves, now activated. After giving my the yellow anesthetic drops though, my eyes were fine, the burning abated. It lasted until just now, about a day in total.

I've looked up that using these drops every day is a no go, due to their causing cornea damage with excessive use. But my eyes are burnin' up. Is any aware just how often I can use these drops without causing further damage? What would be the period of time needed between using the anesthetic drops? I'm not to hopeful here.

So what are the possible alternitives available to the anesthetic drops used by my doctor? What else is there that numbs my eyes, which I could use in their place, so that I wouldn't cause even more damage? Has any with burning eyes found anything to help lower the flame?

Oh, I'm already on nearly every oral medication already.

My eyes burn - with me it's an eye allergy. Did the eye doc give you any indication of what was going on re. the burning? My allergy with dx by my opthalmologist. I also have sjogren's, but the burning is the allergy.

My dog also has eye allergies and we use the same drops (obviously not the same bottle!)

I do not have a good answer for you. I work for an optometrist, and for my burning eyes, he recommends Systane Ultra. I use Refresh Liquigel with better results, although neither truly take away the burning for any amount of time. On my worst days, I have to use it every 1/2 hour or so for any kind of comfort. Yes, he did say I can use it as often as needed.

He never mentioned to me it could be nerve related. His answer is, allergies, hormonal, or autoimmune. He thinks mine is hormonal, but I think it's autoimmune. Since I do not have an official diagnosis of celiac disease, he feels it's hormonal.

I feel for you, between my burning eyes, and constant tinnitis, some days are very uncomfortable.

I would see an opthamologist. There are all kinds of drops, including steroid drops. I agree it could be allergies. It could be autoimmune. It could be dryness from indoor heating systems or car heaters blowing on you. It could be any number of things. I would get it checked out.

I have a lot of eye trouble, but mine is Sjogren's. Feels like some one threw sand in my eyes.

Some medications also cause burning/dry eyes. I was on a high dose Betablocker and my eyes were always very painful and dry. Check out the meds you take.

I was diagnosed with episcleritis, which my opthamologist believes is related to my Crohn's inflammation. I use prednisone eye drops if it does not clear up with just moisture drops, or if the burning and pain are particularly bothersome. I am thinking you might want to get a diagnosis of what is causing the burning before you seek any daily treatment or symptom alleviation.
